Question: What type of skills, training and experience would I need?
To become a Photographer for someone such as National Geographic magazine?
I’m a senior in high school and have become very interested in photography the past few years. I know NNG is a pretty high goal, but what type of training and skills would I need to become a successful photographer?
Answer: There are many things you can do to get yourself ready to be a successful editorial photographer
1) attend a school that will give you all the tools you need to use any camera, anywhere, under any conditions, weather, lighting and social environment.
2) spend at least five years working for various photographers as an assistant to hone your photographic skills and learn some of the “tricks of the trade” when shooing on location
3) start building your camera system along the way. Choose which system you want and then stick with it. Since your goal is to eventually work with National Geographic and other magazines, you will want to pick either Nikon or Canon as your system. They are the only systems which you can either rent special lenses and accessories or get them on loan from their professional services.
4) while in school attend local ASMP and NPPS chapter meetings in your area and when you can, join as a student member. This will give you access to working pros and get you started with your networking base.
5) find some small papers and magazines who will be willing to hire you on a per assignment basis and start building your tear-sheet portfolio.
6) spend a lot of time in the library looking at the images published by the magazines you are interested in shooting for.
7) look into working as a stringer with AP or Reuters.

Question: What is good photography summer camps for high school students? My daughter would love to go to a photography camp this summer. Anyone have any suggestions? Can take great pictures with our Nikon D60, but has never had any formal training.
Answer: It all depends on where you like. In Los Angeles, there's this school called FIDM. And 'primarily a school for fashion, but other subjects such as photography, music, interior decoration ect. They offer summer programs for high school kids, though, are very expensive. Scholarships are given to students who demonstrate incredible skills. :]

Question: video capture software i’m lost..please help?
I have just installed Ulead video studio 10 on to my lap top, its all working apart fromthe fact that i can’t get it to actually capture anything off the tv/vhs its hooked up to, i try and change the setting to digital tv (thats the only other setting apart from my web cam (integrated)) and it just says changing field order. did i miss something? then goes back to my web cam!!!! do i need a special card in my lap top for it to detect the tv??? , i thought the box thing did that? i’m so confused! alls i want to do is get the videos from the vhs player on to my computer. a step by step guide will really help!
Answer: I can’t speak to your laptop, but I had to put a tv tuner card in a pc to capture live tv using SageTV. It was a hassle to set up, but watching commercial free tv makes it all worthwhile. My suggestion is to contact technical support for your laptop (a longshot) and support for Ulead and see what they have to say. Good luck!!

Question: a 18-55mm lens to be in place to begin with?I'm considering the Pentax Kx, which has 18-55mm lens kit-L (DA-L say what?) Was Review your focal length to some of my photos on Flickr (as he tells me more than my P & S camera) and most of them say 6.3 mm. Some of larger or macro ones say 7.2 or 7.3 mm. A picture says 18.6 mm. So if I had the kx oentax and tried to use the lens came with, I'd also be able to take any photos? Or I just get really frustrated with the focus? What kind of pictures I can take it with a 18-55mm lens. Please do not say that this is a stupid question, I am a newbie, haha. I read a guide to digital photography, but things are more about exposure and shoot. If you know a good site website or may also take the time to explain the focal length / depth of field, I love you forever:) I know that a longer focal length is used for something as a foreground or in fact the larger picture, but I do not fully understand yet. Thanks:)
Answer: The 18-55 zoom is become more or less the standard kit lens for all brands. Focal lengths (ie 18-55mm), practically covers focal lengths most frequently used by the photographer medium (in particular hobby). About Focal length: do not worry about the difference between the focal length of 18-55 and your P & S. The S & P has a sensor lowercase means that light must be concentrated on only a tiny dot. DSLRs generally have a larger sensor means that longer focal lengths for a similar vision, cameras film generally need even greater focal lengths to maintain similar views. Basically focal length tells you how stongly converges the light passing through the lens (More convergence the smaller the number, the lower the number the greater the convergence). This is why it is not so useful as a comparison cameras with different sensor sizes. Today, the focal lengths are sometimes expressed in the equivalent of a 35 mm film camera. Oh yeah about the magnification and focal length apparent field of view. Here is an explanation of the focal field of view. About http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=focal+length depth of field: Depth field is rather complicated to understand if you do not understand how a lens works and how the focus. I'll try to explain all the same. A lens can only be on one point. All infront or behind that point is out of focus. Your eyes do not have the level of detail necessary to see the problems of focusing very small (which is a good because what your eye can focus on one point. Imagine around and just be able to see a point about 0,000,001 mm thick, 1 meters in front of you). In any case, introducing the circle of confusion, which basically is like most things in focus while you can still see them as if they were on fire (ok is more complex than that but that's the only thing you really need to know). So let's summarize what we have so far only a point is in focus, but when you look, you see some distance infront and behind that point as if it were on fire, all that is beyond a certain distance from the focal point will see as out of focus. The next question is what is the distance between the focal point where things seem to still fous. Response, it varies. Next question, what makes it vary and how to vary? Response, a ratio of focal length, subject distance and aperture (ie how big the hole is). at long focal depth is obtained depth of field (more stuff to fire), shorter focal length to give greater depth of field (more stuff in focus). Aperture can be found in f-numbers (the numbers refer to the amount of light can pass through the hole). f larger numbers are smaller openings and small f numbers are larger openings. meshes Minor damage large depth of field, smaller apertures give greater depth of field. The last factor, the subject distance is not so important because you can not really change most of the time, but it has two effects. The first is when the lens focuses on a point to say, 2 meters, has a shallower depth of field than when the lens is focused on an object or almost indefinitely. The second thing is the distance between the object you are focusing on the subject or behind and infront. The farther the object is out of focus by focusing more attention to the subject (the subject of fire) appears, and vice versa. There are a number of websites that explain this, and have patterns that make it easier by using Google or reading Wikipedia pages will probably be easier to follow my explanations. About the DA-L 18-55: The 18-55 is definitely ok to begin with. It is not the best Pentax lens can be found, but it is cheap and covers a range of useful is small. It does not really have any significant optical flaws. The Pentax DA L is the terminology and probably means something, unfortunately I am a Nikon guy myself so I'm not sure. From some quick googling, seems to have two Pentax 18-55mm lens (optically the same thing, the glass and the movement is exactly the same). The difference in DA-L 18-55 is lighter, has a plastic support and a lack of * "Quickshift", while the DA 18-55 II is slightly heavier, has a metal frame and "Quickshift" *. The DA-L is the standard kit lens-pentax. * Quickshift means that you must turn off the autofocus before you can use the ring Focus manually. You can only focus by turning the dial, even when the camera and lens are set to autofocus. Well, I tried to be as detail as possible without making it too complicated, but even after reading I'm afraid of failure. It would be a shame to have completely wasted my time writing these things because place anyway, and I hope you find it useful.
