Question: Portrait and fashion photographers! What is your favorite soft box/ umbrella light?
I’m a college student looking to invest in my first professional photography light. I’m leaning towards soft box but not sure which type to buy. What would you suggest? Small, octagonal, large square? Please let me know a specific type/company name and a link if you can. If you’re anti soft box, tell me why and tell me what you would suggest.
I am a portrait photographer but do enjoy some fashion portraits. I was thinking of a small soft box for the edgy shadows. Let me know what you use.Answer: It all depends on what affect you are trying to achieve. The larger the light source the softer the shadows. Softboxes control spill more than umbrellas. Gridded softboxes even more so.
I use a 24″ softbox and a 33″ umbrella for work with speedlights, I also have a 60″ umbrella and a huge 6′ stripbox with a egg crate grid that I use with studio monoblocs.

Can’t find a link to the stripbox – think they’re out of stock.

Question: What type of lens should I buy to take pictures in daylight and portraits indoors?I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 12x optical zoom 35 mm equiv. and I want to take professional photos in search of my child outside, and so take indoor portraits of my family. I accept sugestions for other types of accessories and fashions that could send me my goal.I already Photoshop CS2. Thank you for answering!
Answer: One of the most important things is more of a technical -. Descend at the same level as your subject do not be afraid to crawl on the ground. Take lots of pictures from different angles. Most lens adapters for these types digital camera, called the peak point and shoot ", will do two things: 1 – zoom from a greater distance which can be great for landscape type pictures – 2. allow you to take macro pictures – these are the types of photos used for extreme close ups when you are only one or two inches away from the object have. The goal that you on the camera lets you take pictures of professional research, just practice a lot with your subject and familiarize yourself with all parameters. If the subject is cooperative and sit still for photos, use the parameter portrait your camera. This setting will make your object look sharper and more indistinct the context. If your toddler is not as cooperative, you can have a "sport" your camera. This parameter has a faster shutter speed to capture subjects in motion. The most important thing I can say is to familiarize yourself with your camera and read the manual so you're aware of all the functions of various parameters. If you want to read about technical details, see "idiots" line of books. They have a book titled "The Complete Idiot's Guide to photography like a pro, this series of books are great in that they decompose all the techniques in "real" English not only the professional jargon or semi-professional photographers is familiar.
