Question: What should my basic amateur SLR setup be?
Okay, so my camera’s hardly amateur, but it’s only because I decided to invest. So I have:
My body: Canon EOS 40D
My *only* lens: Canon 28-135 zoom
My flash: Canon Speedlite 430EX
I’ve also got a CF card, a good strap, a collapsible tabletop tripod, a UV filter, and a camera bag. What other lenses are necessary? A telephoto, or a macro? What other basic accessories should I pick up? Thanks.
Answer: Before you spend any more money, take a class in photography.
I already see some flaws in your choices.
There is nothing wrong with a 40D, but it is NOT an entry level DSLR, so you could have saved some money initially buy purchasing the fine Canon 450D
The Canon 28-135 mm lens is perfect for a 35 mm camera, but not for your standard lens on your 40D … a 18-55 mm would have given you a medium wide angle to medium telephoto lens range … as it is you have a normal to telephoto zoom …. tough to shoot groups or landscapes.
In the beginning there is usually no reason to buy an external flash until you start shooting things like events and have at least a years experience behind you.
You should have at least three or four good 2GB cards or better.
The neck strap that came with the camera is good enough, buying a second one was a waste of money.
A collapsible tripod sounds like you bought a gray market camera and they threw it in as a sweetener. (not useful at all for your fine camera)
The UV filter is a must … good thing you have it.
A camera bag … as long as it doesn’t say, “I have cameras in me … steal me now” it should be fine, but a generic back pack is more practical.

Question: Strap Bronica SQ-A?Okay so im a bit 'confused. I was with a Canon A-1 (35mm SLR) for a little 'time and its been great, but now want to go into medium format photography. I did some research and decided that I wanted just a plain old, cheap camera medium format SLR camera. And I found one!. Bronica SQ-A used one on ebay thats super cheap (under $ 200). My only question is whether this, if im using the camera for street photography handheld (which I know might be aa bit 'difficult), there as a shoulder bag to buy for this camera? or not? I also read something about a life view finder level? Im really confused and need to know if and how can I make a photograph of the handheld with my medium format camera.
Answer: I always used a power of speed on my SQ, not a belt around his neck. The grip made it easier to handle. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=bronica+sq+grip&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=bronica+sq&_osacat=0 Better looking than it already has one on it.
