Question: A Hard Drive with (some) very important data is damaged. Cheap solutions to get the data back?

A 500gb hard drive containing 350gb of data is mechanically damaged and the data will not come out easily. Of those only 10gbs are really important, the rest is just replaceable stuff.
A firm that is catering mainly to businesses offered me to retrieve the data for about 1000$. Needless to say, It’s too much for my pockets, but I still can’t lose those 8gb.

Answer: You say mechanically damaged? Do you mean the heads are rubbing on the disks? Will the drive spin up? If you can get the comp to “see” the drive in bios, then you should try spinrite! It really does work wonders for cheap! If your drive is not seen by the bios, you may just have a bad logic board, this can be swapped with the EXACT same type from a known working HDD. You have to get the same rev. even, if you can find it. Then you can backup and swap the boards back (the circuit on the bottom of the drive) and youll be all set. If your drive spins up, but it really is a hard crash (drive scratching) then there probably is no other choice than the recovery specialist.

Question: How do I transfer data from a backup DVD in my Pictures.Using Windows XP?

My computer was in the hospital and had new computer mounted components, hence the back up discs. I now need to transfer the data back into their original my documents (pictures) and dozens of favorites, I also have dozens of documents business to be transferred.

Answer: put the disc in. .. an autoplay should pop up if you do not go to my computer and click on the disk ( might say as a removable disk) to view files … copy and paste … you did!

Question: How do I clear videos and pictures off my rewritable dvd camcorder disk?

I have some rewritable DVD camcorder discs and now that I have some clips and pics on it, I wanna erase them. If the discs are rewritable I can do that right? and if so, how?

Answer: STOP!

If you have a SONY HandiCam, you should use it to “erase” the DVD-RW. I learned the hard way.

Use the camcorder to do the erasing.

A computer “can” erase the miniDVD, however, put it back into the HandiCam and it won’t work.

It is just the way it is. I called support and they told that.

Now, maybe Sony wised up and their newer camcorders will work on DVDs that have been erased on a PC. Who knows.

The same may apply for finalizing too. Not sure on that. I could only get the camcorder to finalize a DVD disk.

Question: Is it a DVD camcorder worth the money, or I stick with a regular digital?

My wife and I are in the market for a camera video, and we realized that going directly to a DVD in the camera. I heard that they skip and such, so it worth it? Should I get a regular camera digital video?

Answer: Go digital, quality is much better and it will be worth in the long term. MiniDV is undoubtedly the best.
