I thought, studied, and the intention to buy a Nikon D80 this week and I would appreciate suggestions for "real people" on the important things to have a first time SLR / Digital camera-that-cost-more-than-owner $ 300 (Please remove the obvious suggestions such as a case, screen protector, ect). I am so excited and I can not wait!

Answer: I would say you have a Nikon flash, SB800, SB900 or SB600 carry with you when you want to take pictures of people and you need a fill flash. While the D80 has a built-in flash It has a guide number of small and can only work if you ar close to the subject and since the flash is built close to the target, your subjects are sensitive to red eyes (I do not use the red-eye reduction in camera). I recommend you get Nikon lenses (the real reason you buy Nikon because of their lenses), as the 55-200mm VR for use in portraits and telephoto work. Get a huge memory card, as 4GB or more you can take pictures at the highest JPEG or RAW mode. You'll need a sotware program that can capture and edit RAW Nikon, Nikon Capture as to process raw images Nikon. Have fun with your camera.
