Answer: Go to a psychiatrist. See your gp for a referral if need be, but do not be treated by your gp. Why? You probably have one of two things going on — depression and anxiety or a form of bipolar disorder, type II to be more specific. Hypomania (subthreshhold mania characteristic of BDII) can be difficult to distinguish from anxiety. Most gp’s will go with the anxiety diagnosis and hand you some anti-depressants. The problem is that if you in fact are bipolar, the anti-depressants either will only work briefly, not work, or switch you to hypomania, mania, or a mixed state. Average time to proper diagnosis for BDII is 10 years, 10 miserable years.

What you’re describing already sounds like a mild mixed state or agitated depression. Mild OCD is a symptom of hypomania/mania. Irritability is, too, and so is confused thinking. Feeling depressed at the same time is what would make it a mixed state. Also, first degree relatives with BD or MDD are almost always part of the picture.

How are you sleeping? Not well and not much is another BDII indicator. Are your thoughts happening a little too fast?

FWIW, I have bipolar and was misdiagnosed as MDD too long. This is the first time I have suggested that someone on Y/A does in fact have bipolar symptoms. If I’m wrong, may be the case, there will be no harm done by seeing a competent psychiatrist. Besides, s/he can help with depression and anxiety plus give you a referral to a therapist.
