Question: Nikon D40 6.1MP- What about lenses and filters?
I have a Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR with its basic lens. I would like to get other lenses/zooms...which one do you recommend? I am looking into making some good lighting effects and stuff, conceptual pictures ? What about filters? Thanks!
Answer: Are you looking to take portraits, landscapes, closeups? There are different lenses for different applications, so you'll need to figure out what exactly you want to do. The best thing would be to go to an actual photography equipment store and talk to the experts about which lense will work best for any of your desired applications. (Side note: I'm sure they'll tell you this, but make sure you get either AF-S or AF-I lens for your D40, as they are the only types that will auto-focus on your camera).
Lighting effects are done with the lights, not lenses. You can get some interesting effects with filters, though. There are star filters that can be used to give the light a "starry" look (see link below).

Question: If I have the lens that comes with a Nikon D5000, the optical filter can I buy?The 18-55mm lens is he says, so I can buy any lens of 18mm to 55mm filter? Or should it be 18-55mm? Like, I can buy a 53mm lens filter for the lens?
Answer: Look on your goal: there will be a symbol that looks like a circle with a diagonal line through it. This is your thread size of the filter. (Ex: "symbol" of 52 or 52mm) From there, just look for filters of this size. Each lens or at least may have a different size of the filter, so do not expect one size fits all kind of thing, if you plan to buy any several lenses. 52, 55, 62 and 72mm sizes are fairly common.

Question: a question about Canon Rebel XTi and Nikon D40 kit lens...?
Ok, so i am still torn between which one of these two cams to buy or maybe even consider the upcoming Canon Rebel XS/1000D. But as i was going through some awesome pictures posted on the Flickr site taken with these 2 cameras like:
Nikon D40 :Canon Rebel Xti :
I was wondering if these amazing pictures can be taken with their kit lens and maybe the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens for the Xti or the Nikon 55-200mm (AF-S DX VR) for the D40, because for now those are the only lens i can afford. Or am i being fooled by these pictures as they can only be achieved with higher end lenses?
Does anyone know a site where i can check out pictures taken with these lenses?Answer: According to the exif data, that was taken at 10mm, so the kit lens and the 55-250 wouldn't be able to take that same shot. Then there's the possibility that a filter was used, then maybe some post processing with photoshop. So technically, no.
First you need to see what image it is that you want to capture.
Then see what the lens can do. The iq on the kit lens, at least on the Canon, is ok, but not great. Of course you may luck out and get a great copy (cross your fingers when you buy)If you're starting off new, I would suggest waiting for the XS, there are some people that say the IS version of the kit lens is good.
So you can buy it w/the kit lens & save up and get the awesome 17-55 2.8 IS which is around $1100 (more than the XS body) with the XS body. (After all, what good is it to have the body and no lense or vice versa)
Buy just the body and take the saved $$ and buy a 3rd company lense, which has good iq but not as good as the 17-55 Canon, for around $450-500

Question: What is the best SLR kit? Canon vs Nikon?Canon Rebel XTi 10.1MP with 28-135mm Lens vs Nikon D300 with 18-55mm 12.1? So Im deciding to keep a camera with crappier Beter Lens vs better camera with lens crappier. I have two cameras already, and I wonder where I should keep / that already? I also have a goal for the second gun is a 75-300mm. So what would keep you kit? I do not really take pictures of my children, nothing professional is happening here
Answer: well, the XTi is the entry level addition, the D300 is a semi-pro. I say sell the XTi with the lens, and sell the 18-55mm lens, but not your D300, and get a great all-round lens, like this:% http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products / Product-Archive/Camera-Lenses/2159/AF-S-DX-VR-Zoom-NIKKOR-18-200mm-f 252F3.5-5.6G-IF-ED.html course, you can always do things differently by selling two cameras and now you get one you really like, with Nice goal. Or maybe sell the D300 and 18-55mm lens to buy an entirely turn your Canon XTi. It is important what you want. I know that if I to your situation, I would sell everything, but the D300 and make me a lens of Nice
