Question: How to take a black and white picture with this kind of background and lighting?
I am using a 55mm Nikon (not digital). I am not professional either. I am not going to edit the picture on the computer so I want the kind of effect. What can I use as a background and light placement and brightness around my house? Is it a dark room with lighting equipment? I am developing with chemicals myself and using an enlarger to print at school, in case this info helps you out for some reason. For the picture I have imagined to take, I want the lighting to not be extremely harsh so I can catch detail and grittiness of my subject. Thanks.

Answer: The picture is easy to take and if you are developing and printing yourself then you can most certainly get the effect there.
The lighting is simple single light from the right (even says in the notes that it was only a desk light)
The background should be black material if possible.
Expose for the subject rather than a general metering. The "good" part is when you get to the printing.
You can use "multigrade" paper to get a good contrast and dodge and burn as necessary.
Do a test strip first to find the best overall exposure for the shot.
Then do a print based on that.
Then look at that print in detail and mark out the areas which need dodging and burning and head back to the darkroom to play around.a

Question: I plan to buy Nikon D3000. At only 18-55mm or 18-55mm and 55-200mm?D3000'm buying this black Friday. I also have to buy 55-200mm in addition to the normal 18-55mm. BestBuy is offering the two lenses and a carry bag over the camera for $ 600 .. while there is no memory card included and a standard warranty of 1 year. In a separate deal I am getting the camera 18-55 mm 8 GB Memory card + case for $ 514 (standard warranty). Which deal is better considering the fact that I'm starting to use a DSLR. I look forward to portraits of remarkable detail (softened backgrounds, etc.) Furthermore, should I buy a cleaning kit? Or a 3-year extended warranty?
Answer: For people just starting out, that photographers are not working and will not be spending thousands dollars on the glass, try and buy the body only (if possible) or get the cheapest kit you can find. Next, ditch the idea of 55-200. Sony tries to push the same thing and I think that is not the ideal set up. Trust me when I say you are going to want to carry two lenses, to change while you are out and it is not the most Funny world. In addition there is a chance only to get more dust inside the camera or another. It 'best to find a 18-200mm Tamron or Sigma for all-purpose zoom and just leave that applied to the camera at all times. Nothing more to bring, without lens changes, and covers a wide range. Along the road to get serious and if you buy more lenses, you can buy glass serious pro glass. skip the cleaning kit, and extended warranty, cheap tripod and all the gadgets to understand what you really need. Get the camera body as cheap as you can from an authorized dealer / seller.

Question: what's the best soft box for the Nikon sb900?
I have a Nikon D700 and recently purchased an SB 900. I would like to photograph portraits and people using off camera flash. On the net it seems the Lastolite Ezybox 60x60 is fine for the sb900.
A Photoflex litedome kit seems to be cheaper though. Am confused as to what might be the best choice for location shots of people. Any tips?Answer: Litedome XS
