Question: What sort of studio lighting do I need?
I need some to invest in some portable studio equipment. I think I’m gonna go for this light tent:
http://www.stevesphotoshop.co.uk/light_tent_studio_cube_200cm_extra_large.html
because it’s convenient and would work well for what I want to do aside from run of the mill formal shots. I have no idea about lighting though and would like to keep it as cheep and basic as possible for now.

Would something like this be sufficient?
I don’t really know much about flash/continuous lighting either but I think for me continuous would be a lot easier.
Any help appreciated!
*cheapSo light tents aren’t so good for general people shots? Would something like the two lights I linked to just with a normal backdrop work better?
Answer: The light tent is basically for product shots where even, shadowless lighting is required. The lighttent material acts as a diffuser with the lights situated outside. (I use a smaller version)
For “people” shots, you are best with a three light setup as the basic.
This then gives you more control and you can adjust to have more/less shadow, you can highlight the hair (to separate from the background) etc.You should add a softbox/snoot and a couple of umbrellas to your basic kit and then buy a couple of books on basic portraiture lighting setups.
Once you have more idea of how the positioning of lights affects the shot then you can start practicing more with reflectors, dark boards etc.
If you can get hold of a shop mannequin then they are good for practising on.

Question: what would you use for outdoor photography?
a beauty dish or a large soft box. and would you put a diffuser over the beauty dish? dont say use natural lighting… i want to experiment.
Answer: Beauty dish and no diffuser. Soft boxes for my money don’t travel well as they take up a lot of room or take a bit to get set up. I have a soft box that fits on my flash and I would probably pick that first over a large soft box just due to convenience. Being outside with any amount of light, I don’t think you’ll need to diffuse much if at all. Good Luck.

Question: Nikon SB800 flash light attachment to add?I need to add a diffuser or soft box on my Nikon SB800 flash to eliminate harsh shadows or even light, can anyone advise? You help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Answer: Gary Fong is good stuff. For the value and ease of use in a diffuser of all, I am a big fan of the fen-Omnibounce I'm for less than $ 20. Here are some photos on Flickr with "Omnibounce" http://www.flickr.com/ tag search /? Omnibounce q = & ss = 2 & s = int
