Question: Portrait and fashion photographers! What is your favorite soft box/ umbrella light?
I’m a college student looking to invest in my first professional photography light. I’m leaning towards soft box but not sure which type to buy. What would you suggest? Small, octagonal, large square? Please let me know a specific type/company name and a link if you can. If you’re anti soft box, tell me why and tell me what you would suggest.
I am a portrait photographer but do enjoy some fashion portraits. I was thinking of a small soft box for the edgy shadows. Let me know what you use.Answer: It all depends on what affect you are trying to achieve. The larger the light source the softer the shadows. Softboxes control spill more than umbrellas. Gridded softboxes even more so.
I use a 24″ softbox and a 33″ umbrella for work with speedlights, I also have a 60″ umbrella and a huge 6′ stripbox with a egg crate grid that I use with studio monoblocs.

Can’t find a link to the stripbox – think they’re out of stock.

Question: What type of lens should I buy to take pictures in daylight and portraits indoors?I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 12x optical zoom 35 mm equiv. and I want to take professional photos in search of my child outside, and so take indoor portraits of my family. I accept sugestions for other types of accessories and fashions that could send me my goal.I already Photoshop CS2. Thank you for answering!
Answer: One of the most important things is more of a technical -. Descend at the same level as your subject do not be afraid to crawl on the ground. Take lots of pictures from different angles. Most lens adapters for these types digital camera, called the peak point and shoot ", will do two things: 1 – zoom from a greater distance which can be great for landscape type pictures – 2. allow you to take macro pictures – these are the types of photos used for extreme close ups when you are only one or two inches away from the object have. The goal that you on the camera lets you take pictures of professional research, just practice a lot with your subject and familiarize yourself with all parameters. If the subject is cooperative and sit still for photos, use the parameter portrait your camera. This setting will make your object look sharper and more indistinct the context. If your toddler is not as cooperative, you can have a "sport" your camera. This parameter has a faster shutter speed to capture subjects in motion. The most important thing I can say is to familiarize yourself with your camera and read the manual so you're aware of all the functions of various parameters. If you want to read about technical details, see "idiots" line of books. They have a book titled "The Complete Idiot's Guide to photography like a pro, this series of books are great in that they decompose all the techniques in "real" English not only the professional jargon or semi-professional photographers is familiar.

Question: I’m a guy with really thick and puffy hair which curls at the ends. HELP!?
Ok, so I really hate my hair, it’s extremely thick and light, so that means it gets puffy. I can literally press my hair into my head and there’s a good 3cm or something before the outside of my hair touches my head. I cant style it with gel because the hair is too thick and it all just clumps together.
Also it tends to grow “up” and then “out” so really the hair is a lot longer then it looks, adding to the puffiness. I really have no idea what to do, I’ve looked at hairstyles online but they all look too good to be true, like I don’t think my hair could by styled into ANYTHING! Also my face shape wouldn’t suit a short style and the medium styles looks terribly high maintenance.
Does anyone have any idea what I’m talking about? And know anything I can do to help? Don’t have a camera so I cant post pictures I’m afraid
Answer: Yes, YS’s hair was light that. He kept it cut short.

Question: Gary Fong color gels, used with whale tail?I have a Gary Fong Whale Tail, and so far I've been really pleased with the results has been – I decided to buy another to test the use of color gels to change the simple white background color – I saw the video that accompanies the gels with respect to the creation in this sense, it did not work for me – my training was white, no color cast -. I used two SB800 flashes on stands with one whaletale w / color gel very close to the further decline, the camera left – the other camera right back in the room with a session through umbrella. and my room is small, 12×10 I think so I'm thinking that maybe the light was left with one overwhelming gel color? I tinkered with the settings for both lights, lower power and so on, still no luck. Not too sure what I'm doing wrong – anyone have any experience with this product that can "shed light" to me on how to create this effect? I would appreciate it!
Answer: This is something of a problem. study of a typical lighting First I suggest you turn off the main light and get your exposure right background – which should show the effect of the filter gel. A flash meter is useful in stage. Once you have that right exposure you need to address the fall off your head light … This involves having the subject close to the source light. The closer the light source to the theme of enlightenment faster fall off, and that goes to the background. (This applies the "rule inverse square "principle.) Hopefully, by itself solve the problem, but if not (because their area of study is too small, for example) must have into account any French flag to protect the backdrop of the light source, or simply "fringes" in light of what is still pours on the subject, but not in the background. Once you do it well, measuring the settings now have a relationship … to change all settings can also obtain the global level adequate lighting for the particular DOF you want. So let's say now that they have an opening of F11, you can eliminate the power down on all units of 2 or 3 stops down to something more appropriate for your needs, such as F4 or F5.6.
