Question: I need advice on a flash setup for my camera. Any suggestions?
I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi with a 18-55mm IS Lens & EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens. I would like a flash, but I do not know which one is for my purpose. My photography is for a hobby, but I do not to produce great pictures. I have just got this camera a few months ago, so I am very fresh and do not know all the ends and outs. I am by no means a professional, and I am not looking to have the best of the best. I just want something that will give me even pictures than what I am getting now. What is a diffuser? What all would I need to purchase with this flash setup, such as batteries and other accessories? Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Answer: Welcome to the Canon world! Check out http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ there is a whole area about flashes.
Short answer: 430EX or 430EX II would be a good choice. Middle of the road, but good power. Do get the diffuser!
Lighting is crucial to photography, so good luck!

Question: Is the Canon Speedlite 220EX work with a digital rebel?I am looking for a flash of less than $ 130 for my Canon Rebel XS. is good / for portraits? I would use a diffuser, if I used it for portraits. Thank you!
Answer: NO on camera flash is good for the portrait. Flash units are used mainly for the events and some photojournalism (usually fill flash). Shooting portraits require at least one light main (usually about 45 degrees off axis of the lens) and maybe a filling, if you want to reduce the drama a little. Later he added a backlight, maybe a Some light hair and lighter fare such as configuring gobos, grids, snoots, beauty rings, soft boxes, umbrellas and much much more.

Question: What is the difference between a Softbox and one of those umbrella lights in Studio Lighting?
Answer: A softbox diffuses the lights. Where as an umbrella generally reflects (unless it is shoot through). In my experience the softbox creates a more natural tone for portrature rather than the umbrella. The umbrella can tend to be a bit more harsh. But they both have their purposes!

Question: PHOTOGRAPHERS: What is the difference between a softbox and an umbrella is light? Not that it's the same thing, which is to add light to the subject that is soft and balanced … is a better thanthe other outdoor / nighttime?
Answer: Soft Box has more control then the umbrella. So if you want soft light in one area is better to use the window. Soft box takes longer to set, and more difficult to move from place to place. The umbrella (with a front cover to make it a soft Round Box) has spread to most sides. (Yes some people have less and some have more) I used the umbrella for when I wanted very diffuse light is spread over one side to another. When a Thu "shoot" umbrella is used is spreads seriously. So to answer the second question I always just used umbrellas about where I was setting up and move. UNLESS I was lucky and had entered into two assistants then the status window soft car just in case I wanted less in the flow of light.
