Answer: Yes, they will work. Albeit with limitations. No autofocus of course. No VR. And you must use the aperture ring on the lens*.

*Newer Nikon lenses…. specifically those marked with a “G” following the widest aperture value (eg. f/1.4G)… do not possess this ring. So look for older “D” series models, or even manual focus [AI] lenses.

I’m looking to do a project to learn more about cameras and lenses. I would like to build a custom camera. Obviously I cannot produce my own lenses, so I need to purchase some. I’ve had experience with Canon FD and EF lenses where when the lens is not connected to a Canon camera body, the aperture cannot be controlled. Which lenses are capable of the aperture control when not connected to the camera body? Are there any websites that talk about this issue?

Answer: The easiest, cheapest way to do this is to use M42 lenses. There are millions of them and they can all be found on Ebay. Here is a nice list of manufacturers

and bunch of others. They all should have manual focusing and exposure rings.
