Question: Should I get a lens hood, and will it work with a UV filter?

I’m going to Mexico in a week or so, should I invest in a lens hood? I just got a new telephoto lens for Christmas, and I presume there will be many photos involving sunlight.

If so, how do I know which one to get, and will it work at the same time with my UV filter?
The lens is a Canon EF 75-300mmf/4-5.6 III

Answer: Well, get the hood that fits your lens… Either go to a local camera store, or look up your lens on Amazon.com and see what hood they recommend for it.

Alternatively, look at the web site for your lens, and see what the model numbers are for a hood. Then look up that model number in yahoo or google to see what the best price is.

It should work at the same time. All the lenses I’ve seen have the filter screw into the inner side of the lens tube, while he hood screws onto the outside of the lens hood. The only difficulty would be trying to put on or take of the filter wile the hood is on, since the added depth will make the filter harder to access.

Question: filter or lens hood, or both?

If I did have a lens / filter or hood would be just a cheap one. This is for a Canon T2i. also you can use both at the same time?

Answer: It depends on your preferences. I've never broken a glass so you do not feel the need for a filter unless it rains or are on the beach (and even then, no one can have and rely only on the lens cap). I prefer a hood. Protects the lens (even though, as I said I went for years without using one and had never broken anything) and protect against lens flare (which involves filters). This is really my main reason for using a cap now. Yes you can use both at the same time. You see a lot of poseurs tulip with hoods on their goal back (I do not even know why they bother to go to the lenses, you can leave them out since it defeats the purpose).

Question: Why does using a rubber lens hood result in leaving dark areas in the corners of my 35mm photos?

Recently I took a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. A pro recommended using a rubber lens hood especially inside the helicopter where he said the vibration of the glass would result in more lens movement and more glare in the photos. Instead I got these disappointing dark corners which were very pronounced in the photos taken from inside the helicopter. They were even present in the rest of the photos. Because I broke my digital camera I had to use my old Canon EF 35mm. Unlike Peter Lik who has the luxury of waiting a couple days for the sun to light his subject in a favorable manner I had to deal with a somewhat hazy overcast day and people passing in front of me in unpredictable ways. This pro also me I should always use a lens hood. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a lens hood?

Answer: Your pro assumed that you would buy the correct lens hood for your specific lens.

Obviously you did not do that.

Visit a proper camera store and have them sell you the right lens hood.

Question: AC Lens hood for Nikon 35-70 2.8 zoom?

Is there an alternative to the hood DH-1 small lens offered by Nikon. A type of flower hood? I can not find an alternative in addition to a popout rubber.

Answer: The sun visor for each objective are designed to give maximum protection against lens flare, while preventing vignetting at the widest focal length. You can try other colors objective, but it will be a compromise.
