Question: Nikon D3000 macro capabilities?

I am new to using SLR cameras and am looking at getting the Nikon D3000. The body comes with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED II lens (non-VR). Answer: Youre an amateur photographer as I am. it’s a hobby for me not a livelihood. Your lens will focus to .28 meters which is 11 inches. A link to the lens specs is below.

Your camera is $500 with a lens at WalMart. Im assuming you didnt opt for a multi thousand dollar pro DSLR because it doesnt fit your budget.

Professional photographers will always recommend a dedicated macro lens. It is the best way but its expensive. Pros will get the cost back when they charge their customers. You and I wont get the cost back. This is overkill for your camera.

Extension tubes are second best but still pricey and a bit cumbersome to carry.

At $80 for a +3 Hoya filter youd be better off with the extension tubes from a price standpoint. Later you may want a +1, +2, +4 filter as well and at $80 a pop youre looking at $320 for 4 filters.

“Image Quality” is a very relative term. The dirty little secret is quality differences cant be detected by 99.9% of the people in images up to 11×14. If you plan to send your photos to a lab for analysis or want a pro photographer to scrutinize them under a high powered eye loupe it’s a different story.

Go with what youre comfortable with but keep in mind you dont have a high end expensive DSLR. If you want to save a few bucks and get nice images under normal viewing conditions without the scrutiny of high precision scientific instrumentation get a set of close up filters like this. Its the second link below. Theyre inexpensive, easy to carry and most people will never know this is what you used unless you tell them.

my camera …. indeed wasn't cheap. it takes amazing pictures outside and in well-lit situations. details in the pictures taken in macro zoom setting on things really closely is too beautiful. But inside … I can not focus at all, and the images are always very grainy, and generally suck. and the flash … sometimes it is really unnecessary. can someone help me? I liked my camera film much better. this is just confusing.

Answer: Unfortunately, the Panasonic cameras are renowned for their noisy sensors, even when using the lowest ISO. Noise is another name for wheat or spots you get in your photos when shooting in low light. When the camera is set to auto or scene mode at night in low light conditions, will select a higher ISO number, which is why you get photos very grainy. There's not much you can do to improve pictures taken in low light conditions, unlike the ISO setting for the lowest (probably 80 or thereabouts) … but this is really too low for shooting in low light conditions. It would also have to mount the camera on a tripod, and use preferably a delayed shutter release to minimize camera movement … which is not practical in social situations. The higher you raise the ISO, the more the grain will be delivered. Also, some cameras have a difficult time in the light focusing was very low. Just make sure you have the Focus Assist lamp lit. Shoot my Council … only outdoors (or get another brand of camera that is more competent shooting even in low light.
