I have a Nikon D60 an for the most part the standard 18-55mm lens has satisfied my type of photography but I would really like a lens or filter to be able to focus on an object very small and very closely(tears,rain drop, insect, flower, etc) I really can’t afford a macro lens for my D60 so would a Cokin Close-up filter like the 102 or 103 work just as good? Or just wait and invest in a lens?

Answer: If you can afford it, an extension tube will provide the best quality vs diopter filters.

You will want to buy a kit of “closeup” lenses +1, +2 and +4. Cokin makes such filters.

Of course the over all best would be to save your pennies and buy a nice 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Question: The best lighting product for macro photography?

I have been dabbling more and more into photography macro and am not happy with my lighting. I am looking for the best "budget" solution out there. All Nikon gear (but the lighting product need not be): I have a digital SLR with a macro objective 105mm & 52mm filter size. I also have a 300mm zoom with a size 62mm filter and a couple big-up diopters. I also have the SB-600 Speedlight. I also reverse the mountain in May my 50 mm lens on one of the above objectives, I play around. for Macro nature (eg, flowers, insects, leaves) … any suggestion on this "budget" which leads to consider that could offer more flexibility with the different approaches that I presented above? Thank you!

Answer: Your best bet is a ring of light that goes outside your target. You can check the photo sites well known as B & H or Adorama and do a search on "ring of light" for those that fit your Nikon. Ring lights have the advantage of putting the light directly on your subject, because they are mounted in front of your macro lens. Doing so will leave any shadows or dead zones that either one or off camera flash would create. It is a great, if expensive gadget to have for macro photography. If you're more adventerous (and possibly cash more limited because a new ring light can run $ 300 + +), you should check this link to an interesting article on how to make your own ring light for about $ 20 in parts you can buy at Radio Shack. It requires some basic electronic skills (welding, etc.) but does not seem terribly difficult. Good luck

I am looking for a book or guide that tells me how to set my Nikon D50 SLR camera for specific scenes. The ideal book would show a photograph and the exact settings (shutter speed, aperture, etc) the camera used. I’ve read the manual, but it’s a bit difficult to remember the various settings. I also want to avoid the “automatic” setting, in hopes of achieving a better shot. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Answer: Unlike P&S cameras there are no settings for specific scenes. The D50 is a fully adjustable camera and the f/stop and shutter speeds depends completely upon the effect you are attempting to archive.

You don’t have to remember your settings. Just compose the shot and set the camera using the fine light meter on the camera, using the aperture to set the depth of field, or the shutter speed to either “freeze” the action or imply speed by panning at slow shutter speeds.

These are the things you will learn if you take a couple of classes in photography.

You may have noticed that the photographers you see shooting at professional sports games are not continually looking at notes to see how to shoot the next shot. They bring the camera up to their eye and then make any adjustments they need to make and then take the shot.

Question: I can set my Nikon S70 camera somehow to make the pictures do not come out blurry?

I tried to catch the camera very steady and took a picture with him, but then the image was blurred So I was wondering if there is a way to put it in some way to get a clear picture.

Answer: If the photo is blurry its not the camera. You "tried" to keep the camera stable, but still not succeed. Small cameras without optical viewfinders are more difficult to hold steady. Youre just going to have to learn how.
