sandisk extreme III compact flash 4gb holds more pictures than advertised. I have had two of these before and when formatted and shooting in raw i can only get 236 pictures with an olympus e-510 camera. I just purchased 3 more and formatted as usual and camera says 236 pictures for raw mode yet in the e-510 and newly purchased e5-20 two of the cards held 400 plus pictures. All 5 cards I have are the same brand and size. I verified that all the pictures were taken in raw. On one card 90% of the pictures were takenin vertical position so I can kind of understand that but the other card 90% were in the vertical position.

Answer: The manufacturing specs are for raw mode. Even this will be an estimate, depending on the megapixel value of the camera. A 20-megapixel camera will place 50% as many raw shots on the card than a 10-megapixel camera. If you’re shooting jpegs, then these are generally smaller than raw files, as they have been compressed. So you’ll be able to fit more of them on the card.
