Okay my nikon coolpix 5700 internal flash isn't working but I bought this extended flash a slave flash.
What I want to know is how can I fix the settings so that my slave flash would flash to make my pictures brighter . I have it set to slave on and the slave mode I have it to is S1 can anyone help me?Answer: If you have it set to slave mode, that means it needs to see another flash going off to trigger it - that's what 'slave' means.
Use it on the hotshoe in non-slave mode (make sure the trigger voltage is safe), or better still get some wireless radio triggers (a set of RF602's costs around £25 and they are very reliable).

How do I turn off the built in flash on a Nikon D90 in order to use an external flash on the hot shoe
Answer: Take the mode dial off the auto setting. Try it in aperture or shutter priority, or if you think you can handle it, manual mode. If you're still totally lost, P for program will set your aperture and shutter, but the flash will only pop up if you set it to. It only pops up in auto, or in some scene modes.

Question: What does an external flash do for a camera?
I finally made the jump from pocket point-and-shoot to a "bridge" super zoom Canon Powershot SX10IS. Having a nice camera has me more interested in photography than ever before.
That being said, what does an external flash add that the built-in flash can't do? Will this make indoor pics even better? Are they hard to figure out how to balance (or whatever you call it... adjust)? Are they a worthy addition to a novice photographer such as myself?
Answer: An external flash such as 430EX is much more powerful than the build in flash. The build in flash is close to the lens axis and therefore you are likely to get a pictures with peoples in red eyes. Also people's faces look flat because there is no shadow.
With an external flash, you can mount it on top of the camera or use a flash bracket with a off-camera cord. You can bounce it or even use it with a small softbox. It opens a lot more options.

Question: How will an external flash improve my pictures on my DSLR?
I own a Canon 40D and i love take pictures and love learning about Photography.
I'm thinking about buying an external flash, mabe the Canon 580 exii and i'm wondering how much benefit and what difference an external Flash would make to a picture that was taken with the same same settings with it's built in flash.Answer: If you simply put it on your camera and shoot away, it will help very little, as the previous posted said. If you take time to really learn how to use it, you can vastly improve your portraits both indoors and outdoors.
