Question: Three polaroid filters?

Randomly polarized light is incident on an ideal linear polarizer. What fraction of the incident light passes through the polarizer?
is
0.50

I cant figure out these two. can someone please help me out

The light then passes through a polaroid with its polarization axis rotated by 51 degrees with respect to the axis of the first. What fraction of the original light intensity passes through this second polarizer?

The light now passes through a third polarizer with its axis of polarization oriented 39 degrees from the second (90 degrees from the first polarizer). What fraction of the original unpolarized light passes through the third polarizer?

Answer: You are correct for the first question, 1/2 of the light passes through one polarizer.
For the second question, it helps to answer the third question first. If there are two polarizers 90 degrees from one another, then no light will pass.
We can think of 51 degrees as being 51/90 ths of fully blocking the light. This works out to 0.567. We multiply that by the 0.5 that made it past the first polarizer and we find that the second polarizer blocks an additional 0.283 of the light, which leaves 0.217 to pass through.

Question: Linear polarization of the offer movies in Seattle?

Where can I buy film linear polarization in or around Seattle? What kind of store could they sell? I'm trying to change a petrologic polarizing microscope for the work so that should be linear and not circular. I saw this film for sale online but do not want to pay $ 6 for something that could only put in an envelope and mail for $ 0.44. Also, if I can find locally then I will be able to test it first. Filters Photo may work, but it could be a kind of expensive and could not be cut to size, as the film.

Answer: This site is where I used to buy film for use during the filming with polarized light on a copy stand or study http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp?pn=3071939&cmss=polarizing+film

Question: SLR Camera Filter – UV vs. ND Clear?

I bought two filters for now for my Nikon D300. One is a Nikon 72mm Circular Polarizer II, and a Nikon 72 NC clear Protector filter. I can not find a Nikon 72mm UV filter. I am wondering if this clear filter can do the same, or, very close work like the UV filter. I see Hoya, Tiffen, Master, they all have 72mm UV filters. Do I need to buy other filters? I can adjust the white balance, etc., in my camera. Please advise. Thank you. Also, if I have a UV, or a Clear filter on my camera, I put a Circular Polarizer over it to enhance the sky, Is it O.K. to do that? without remove the protective filter (clear, or UV) first? Thank you.

Answer: Since digital sensors are not as sensitive to UV as is film and UV filters are there mainly to protect the front element of your lens, the 0 ND will be fine … stacking filters is not recommended. The more lens to air surfaces there are the greater the chance of flare. Also staking filters can introduce vignetting.

Unless you are shooting landscapes as your predominant subject, just exchange the filters as needed.
