Question: How do you work with Depth of Field on the fly with SLRs?

When you take pictures at a football game or parade or some other event, the person or thing you are shooting moves very quickly. How do you quickly choose an aperture that will give you the depth of field you want without resorting to automatic modes? Do you have to memorize tables of focal length and aperture combos?

Answer: An easy way to keep the depth you want while shooting on the fly is to shoot in aperture priority mode, which is a semi-automatic exposure mode. You choose the aperture, the camera chooses all other exposure parameters. So, if you want to keep a shallow depth of field, with a long lens for example, set your largest aperture up to a couple of stops smaller and you’ll keep your DoF pretty shallow, considering longer lenses have a more shallow DoF by nature. You could also shoot in program auto exposure mode and choose a program for large apertures – either one would produce the same outcome. When shooting sports, you have to rely on as many automatic features as will allow for faster shooting as opposed to trying to do so in manual mode, which would be silly if you shoot sports. You don’t have to memorize f/stop tables, or shoot manually unless you want to waste your time. The tone of the question implies that you must think automatic modes aren’t good enough to use, the reality is most of the time automatic modes allow for faster operation and is generally how most photographers shoot unless for special applications. There’s nothing “special” about shooting sports. It’s all about speed. If your lens is long and slow, jack around your ISO to give a shutter speed which will freeze the motion of whatever you shoot, which is generally around 1/500. So if you wish to memorize something, memorize shutter speed effects on motion tables.

Question: PC system for still images?

I need a "turnkey" system, the digital images of objects on the table brings. So, I need a camera, lens (es), stand & lighting and PC software, so I can see what the image will look like on the PC, before I take it. I think I must get in a position to "snap" the streaming video on a still. Stuff I must shoot enough at a distance of about one meter an inch. This week I needed a ball about an inch wide and about an inch depth of field. Usually depth is <10% of the distance to objects. Can one camera lens ? Do Do I need to buy a digital camera or a little less when you consider I saved pictures to the computer would be? There is no movement, but I want to be able to adjust lighting and placement for the best shot. Where do I get for this? I have several camera stores and tried to look surprised. Suggestions as to where They should do? I have very limited budget <$ 2000 total.

Answer: You need a camera that you laptop a can to be connected to. This is not a cheap solution, and you will not find it under $ 2000. You need to rethink your budget, or be prepared to not having a system exactly what you work for the demand. If the budget is fixed, look for a good digital camera with an easily accessible media slots, so that it removes and can be popped into a computer for review. Another alternative is to use something like the Canon S5 or G9. Both have video out ports, so you can CV Search Preview on a TV or portable player DV.
