Question: Worth it to get a dslr?

Ok, yes. Dslr’s are amazing. I know that. However, I am not able to buy anything extra if I get a dslr which would have me miss out on macro shots and high zoom. Is it really worth it to buy a dslr when I can get a point and shoot (Canon Powershot sx130) that offers macro, 12x zoom, good aperture, good angle lens, good iso range, and a good range of shutter speed all in one lens?
Basically, is there anything really specific about dslrs that makes them that much better than a point and shoot if I can’t get any extra lenses?

Answer: The three main advantages to having DSLR other than lens choice are:

-Larger sensor size (and thus greater image quality, especially in low-light)
-Higher quality lenses. Even the cheap 18-55mm kit lenses that come with most entry-level DSLRs are better than 99% of the lenses on point & shoots.
-Manual controls. Most point & shoots do not offer manual controls.

So on a budget, the SX130 is great, as you still get the manual controls and a reasonably good quality lens. It won’t do as well at high ISOs at a DSLR and obviously isn’t as expandable, but you can still do great photography with it. I did a lot of photography with my old Canon PowerShot A590 IS before I bought a DSLR. Thankfully, it had manual controls, so I wasn’t at the camera’s mercy when it came to exposure settings.

Good luck!

Question: PLEASE EXPLAIN DSLR LENSES?

Can someone please explain the difference in zoom lenses for a DSLR camera. I am looking at getting a Canon EOS1000D which are available in a kit with lenses but so many different lenses available in kit I dont know what i need. I mainly do landscape photography and macro. I want to know what all the mm are for example 55-250mm IS lens and a 75-300mm or a 10-24mm lens.

Answer: The smaller the number the wider the lens. The larger the number the more telephoto it is. A telephoto lens brings things closer, but you get less of the scene into a photo. Just like a telescope or binoculars.

In DSLR terms what we see in our eyes is around the same as what you will get with a 35mm lens. A smaller number will bring more of a scene into the camera. A larger number will mean that you get less of the scene than you see with your eyes.

If you mainly do landscapes I would look for a lens that covers a range like 18-55 mm which goes from a basic wide angle to a short telephoto. It is a good first lens.

However, the best thing to do is to go to a camera shop and play with a couple of lenses so you get some idea of what they do.
