Question: How does a monopod work?
I know you attach your camera to it and use it for stabilization purposes, but do you place the monopod ON something, like the ground, and won’t you still get movement from the monopod moving around? I’m trying to decide on a monopod or tripod…thanks.
Answer: For what I do mostly (sports photography), I find monopods invaluable. Unlike tripods, they allow you to move quickly from one place to another, capturing the action.
When standing, your two legs are the other parts of the tripod. Even used a railing or the top of a counter to steady a camera when shooting? The monopod provides that little extra stability. If you’re sitting (as I do at WNBA & NBA games) the monopod can be shortened to give you that stable platform with using longer zoom lenses.
I have 3 or 4 monopods and about the same number of tripods. Each has its use.
Tripods are great for scenics or self-portraits. They give you the best stability of all. But in public places, I’ve always had my tripod bumped or jostled by other people moving around! So, I usually use my monopod wherever there are other people in the area.
Think of it as a cane or walking stick for your camera.

Question: Night Scene – One Leg?I would like to start in night shots and get some pictures of people downtown at night. I look forward to tripods, but realizes a monopod might be more convenient. Would it not make sense to consider a monopod, that I may still move at the end of the camera is around or I should you just get a tripod?
Answer: The camera must be absolutely quiet – and monopod is not cut. Http: / / www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2520715156/ This is a 0.7 seconds exposure. There is no way to hold the camera on a monopod to get this brief. I know that carrying around a tripod is a pain but this is what you need.

Question: Cinematography- What is a zoom lens, and what are three important parts of it?
Answer: A zoom lens is a mechanical assembly of lens elements with the ability to vary its focal length (and thus angle of view), in contrast to the fixed focal length (FFL) lens or prime lens.
Three important parts: (1) focusing lens, (2) positive (converging) lens[es], and (3) negative (diverging) lens[es].
A zoom lens initially receives light through an afocal zoom system, which may be composed of many lenses, after which the beam passes through a focusing lens, which is similar to a standard, fixed-focal-length photographic lens.
A simple afocal zoom system consists of two positive (converging) lenses of equal focal length (lenses L1 and L3) with a negative (diverging) lens (L2) between them. L2 has an absolute focal length less than half that of the positive lenses. Lens L3 is fixed, but lenses L1 and L2 can be moved axially, and do so in a fixed, non-linear relationship. This movement is usually performed by a complex arrangement of gears and cams in the lens housing, although some modern zoom lenses use computer-controlled servos to perform this positioning. As the negative lens L2 moves from the front to the back of the lens, the lens L1 moves forward and then backward in a parabolic arc. In doing so, the overall angular magnification of the system varies, changing the effective focal length of the complete zoom lens.
