Question: Photoshop CS3…change to no background on the canvas…?

I’m trying to put my company’s logo on a yellow background, however, the pre-designed logos were already created with white backgrounds. When I open them in photoshop, I am unable to use the magic wand to select the entire image because part of our logo is gradiented (fading out). I need a background without color what so ever so that when I put it on a color, the color will bleed through (does this make sense?). I did not design the logo and I’m not great at designing in Photoshop…so recreating it is not possible. Tell me how to get no background from having a white background! HELP!

Answer: This is why us designers say it is a big no no to design a logo in photoshop. It is also a bigger no no to have gradients that fade into the background in a logo. Logos with gradients that fade into the background can only be placed on top of the specific color it originally has. And as a designer, I seriously try to avoid altering a logo that has already been made.

With some major photoshop editing, you can erase the gradient with the eraser tool, but you’ll have to do so with different settings on the eraser tool. With the eraser tool selected, you’ll have to click on where it says “Brush” just below the menu bar at the top. Change the brush size of the eraser to something adequate, and change the hardness to something soft, like 25%, you can undo a few times to get it just right. The hardness level makes the eraser tool erase things more softly… we call it a “feathered” edge in photoshop.

Unfortunately, after you’ve made it transparent, there are only a few file formats that will be able to support the transparency. JPEGS and such will just change it to white, giving you a white box around the logo. If you need to export a certain file format, only PNG, TIFF, and GIF with keep the transparent information, allowing you to place the gradient on top of any background color. The PSD of course, will also allow you to place the logo on top of any background color.

Unfortunately the word gradient used in photoshop means to transition from one certain color to another color. If I saw your file, it may be easier for me to explain how you can go about gradating it into the background. Yes gradating is the correct word here

Answer: Actually, there is no way to screen fireworks fade. You can do an image fade effect to the canvas.
