Question: lighting for band photo shoot?

I am doing a photo shoot for the band of my brother in a couple of weeks, and I need help with lighting. I used only natural light so far, and now I need to get into some more professional lighting. I have a Canon Rebel XS, and without enlightenment different that in camera flash (which, as most do not know is that big.) What would be the best type of lighting for me to buy? I do not want to spend more $ 100, and I want the lighting to work well in very dark to light situations. In addition, as would be idiotic for me to bounce light off of an umbrella shop normal, or cover it with a kind of speaker? Thanks so much for your help. We are planning on a lot 'of external shocks, as well as in a cinema (If we get permission.) And possibly within a building rather simple. How well softbox for portraits of people working more?

It depends on the size of the softbox and the tension you have for your light. Perhaps because there are what? 4 people in the band. They did not too distant though. Bring a large white cardboard or buy a reflector to help bounce some 'light where you need it all. I suggest bringing enlightenment as possible (not more than 3 sources of light), because if it is too much, you can always take it away. You'll be kicking yourself and do a re-shoot if you do not have enough light for pictures.
