Question: Cokin filters?

I’m looking into buying more filters (in particular a graduated neutral density), and I have been looking into the Cokin series. In particular, I’m looking at this link http://www.adorama.com/CKBPP.html

I am a hobbyist and I will probably upgrade cameras in the next 5 years. I don’t want to have to both with buying all new filters if I get a different mm. Right now, I have a 52mm Panasonic FZ7.

Two questions – Does anyone have any experience with the Cokin series? Likes, dislikes? Also, should I buy the P series or the Zpro? Which one would be safer if I was to upgrade later?

Thank you very much!
Also, what accessories would I need? I already have a few 52mm filters. Would I need to buy the step up ring? Anything else?

Answer: Cokin filters are ok. You only need 1 ring to connect to your lens, so change the ring if you change your lens or camera. I’d consider ND, possibly 2 or 3 as dark as possible (since they are mostly used for making movement blur in daylight conditions / streaking water and waves etc) and some grad ND filters to ‘pull in’ skies – I prefer Pro-4 filters for this task as they do a really nice / effective uneven grad. A polarizer is good too, other than that I don’t use many filters.

Buy the P series – Zpro is for medium format cameras and 5 years is now a very long time in photography, so don’t worry about the upgrade – besides medium format DSLR cameras are outrageously expensive and the vast majority of pros use 35mm-type bodies, as opposed to medium format-type bodies.

First, let”s start by searching Ebay for Holder Cokin:

Question: How do you use the Cokin preshaped frames, what holder & how do they fit?

Answer: The cokin system is based on a variety of holder sizes, from A, P, then X & Z pro.

A is a wee bit old fashioned now, as most folk like a wider lens than an effective 35mm (21mm in APS-C digital money) The P system isn’t all that much more expensive, and gives you the option of using wider lenses, with up to 77mm fiter threads.

By filter thread I mean the thread in side most slr lenses, at the front element.

With the cokin system you buy one holder, the filters you want, then just buy inexpensive adaptor rings to fit your lenses.

A couple of notes of caution….

Make sure your lenses front element doesn’t rotate when focusing as that will cause problems with ‘directional’ filters such as polarisers and gradient filters.

The cokin filters are made of plastic, and can be prone to scratching in a way that glass ones (tiffin, lee) aren’t, but these cost a lot more.

Unless yo have very expensive fast telephoto lenses or extreme wide angle lenses then the P sereies will probably be the most useful to you.

Question: After market filter holder of anything?

I'm looking for a trademark holder Fotodiox after market filter that is advertised as compatible with filters Cokin P series. Does anyone have any experience with these "marks of imitation", or is it better to spend the extra money and buy the Real McCoy series Cokin P holder?

Answer: Well, I do not think the title track. What really matters is the filter that can hold. Because the end is important to place the filter holder. Fotodiox holder if they fit any Cokin P and cost cheaper I think you can try.
