Question: Can I use the Cokin filter system with round filters?

According to the website, you can use round filters with the Cokin P series (http://www.cokin.fr/cokin-data/holder-system/A-7.jpg)

Can these round filters be other brands, or do they have to be Cokin?

For example, I have a lens with 52mm diameter. Can I use a 52mm round filter along with the Cokin system, or do I have to get a larger size round filter?

Thanks.

Answer: You can put any round filter on the lens and the Cokin filter attached to that filter. The Cokin round system filters only fit in the Cokin holder.

Question: Graduated Neutral Density Filters – Which one?

I decided to purchase the Slim Filter Cokin P holder (this is a good choice?) that can be used with a wide angle converter lenses as well as my fixed angle zoom lens, but what filter to buy? Money is a problem then it certainly can not afford a filter Lee. I wonder what is more convenient option while maintaining quality. From what I read the Cokin filters are not the most children – or are they? Has anyone heard of Fotodiox? From the price I think that can not be of the highest quality is. I definitely want to go with the rectangular, rather the filter round. Moreover, it would be more flexible to start with – a stop 2 or 3 alcoholic stop (if the terminology right)? I would really appreciate some thoughts and / or guidance on this.

Answer: A two-stop (4X) gradient ND is often recommended as a good starting point for shooting landscapes. The Cokin P-series is a reasonable price and it works reasonably well. The main complaint with the Cokin filters is that they are graduating Gray (!) And non-graded neutral density, and will cast a very light color. You have to try and see if it bothers you enough to buy the filter Lee! ;-) The P121M (2 stop soft edge) is a good starting point to get the feeling of using a grad. Then you might want to add a P120 (1 stop soft edge). Remember that you can always have a stack of stop and arrest of two to obtain an arrest three, if you really need. BTW, if money is very tight and you're shooting digital you can take two photos: one exposed for the sky (bright side) and one exposed for the shadows (two stops down) and then merge the two in Photoshop to achieve the same effect without filters.
