Question: Nikon Coolpix P90. Do you know anything about it?

Nikon Coolpix P90 P-90 12.1MP 3″

What do you think of this type of camera? I can pick one up for $480 with alot of extras like memory card, tripod, carry case and extra charger/battery. I would like to hear your thoughts on the camera as i don’t want to get ripped off or be unhappy with the purchase. I don’t know much about cameras so any input you could give me would be fantastic, thanks :)

Answer: This is a very decent camera in so-called “bridge” category. It’s an advanced point and shoot, which means while it still suffers from most p&s shortcomings, like tiny sensor, only so-so low light performance, and inability to change lenses (which with given 24x zoom that is a bit wider than most competition is not a big problem for most) – has some of the more advanced features, like manual and semi-manual modes, a decent size to get a good grip and a more or less acceptable lens. The picture quality of these bridge cameras is generally somewhat better than of their smaller siblings.

This camera costs about $320 on Amazon:

(add to cart for price)

This is what you should pay for it. The extra $160 load of accessories is usually not worth the price in the kits like this. I have no idea which one you are considering, but in general these kits are overloaded with cheap brandless accessories about 10% of which may actually be useful.

Why anyone would need an extra charger is a mystery to me (unless you are prone to losing them), an extra battery is almost guaranteed to be non-Nikon brand and in that case it’s not just overpaying, but straight forward hazardous to your camera. One should never use a third party battery for the camera, as they are not designed for it, no matter what the packaging says.

A memory card is something you do need right away, but not for $100+. Get one of these for under $20:

Or if you want to go 8gig one of these (some of which are STILL under $20):

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=8gb+sdhc&x=0&y=0

A carry case is also not going to be worth the extra, as it’ll probably be a cheaply made generic camera bag, and tripod – once again, don’t expect anything of high quality in a kit. I’ve never seen one of these big sets that was worth the price tag. Ever.

One last thing, before you order any piece of electronics and especially camera gear online check:

http://www.resellerratings.com/

and

http://www.bizrate.com/

Find the merchant (if you can) and see the reviews. You’ll be very shocked what you will read about some of the cheapest ones online, and how they are not really as cheap as they seem. And if you can’t find them on these two sites – stay away. It’s probably just a new name for one of the well known bait and switch places, they use to circumvent bad press (they often create new websites for that). Only buy from respectable places, like Amazon, B&H, Adorama, BeachCamera, and the like. Read the reviews!

Good luck,
LEM.

Question: Help with a telescope for my son please!?

I know nothing about these … but my 6 year old son wants a telescope to see the stars and planets. 2 Im posting descriptions and prices …. can someone PLEASE tell me which is better:) 1. 525x Telescope with Carry Case Was $ 109.99, now $ 69.99 Features 6X, 25mm Finderscope with crosshairs, 1X eyepiece assembly, 4 interchangeable lenses, alt-azimuth mount and diagnonal viewer. Focal length: 700mm, objective diameter: 60mm. Includes aluminum tripod, Cyber CD software for tracking stars of heaven, and instruction manual. The ages of 10 and beyond. ……….. O 2. KonuSpace – 4 Junior Telescope $ 49.99 50 mm (1.9 ") & Zoom Spotting Telescope with Table Tripod Which is more desirable for both instruments of vision in one! The 100x telescope for astronomical use has two eyepieces included-100x and 48x. The 28x zoom spotting scope for terrestrial use has a 6x zoom lens with 28x magnification. Includes 90 diagonal degrees. Focal length is equal to 600 mm and focal ratio f/12.

Answer: Any of these is a wonderful option bad. Binoculars not a bad idea, but you can also see if you have a local astronomical society that could lead to the visit. This way, he would view through some telescopes good, and if it turns out that he is interested, the people there are expected to give good advice. The least expensive scope worth buying will be a Dobsonian. Orion sells one for about $ 200. Any telescope that is advertised is the power tends to be a frustrating toy for use, and do more harm than good. Astronomy should be fun. My scope is a state of the art priced like a new car reasonably well, and I would never try to go up 525x with him.
