I’ve collected a bunch of lenses for my EOS 30D, but now I’m taking an intro photography class that works entirely in film. Will my lenses be backward compatible with a 35mm Canon Rebel?

Answer: If your film body is also from the Canon EOS line, which is every SLR they produced after 1987, your lenses will continue to work. Canon’s older film bodies (before 1987, such as the A1) used a different lens mount system. The old lens mount system was called FD and the new one is called EF.

But since the 30D has a cropped sensor, you’re probably (also) using some Canon EF-S lenses, such as the Canon 18-55mm, the 17-85mm, the 17-55mm, etc. Canon’s EF-S lenses have a smaller image circle than regular lenses. These lenses produce massive vignetting (black edges) when used on a film SLR. This becomes most noticeable at the wide end of the zoom. The same is also true for third party lenses that were ‘made for digital’, such as the Sigma DC line and the Tamron Di ll line. So check – you might need a different standard zoom/ wide angle zoom. All of Canon’s primes and tele-zoom lenses are fine.

Question: How can I reduce the brightness of the flash on my Canon EOS 300D SLR?

I recently bought a second hand Canon EOS 300D camera reflex, but I'm having a little 'problem with the flash. It is extremely bright, and almost all my photos with flash come out white. I hope there is a setting to change this, and that its not bad. Please help: L

Answer: Jim offered some decent advice. There are a couple of other things you can also do. The best thing would be to get a hotshoe flash with E-TTL. In this way, the camera can record the amount of flash light is lost and you can change the angle the flash head.

ok I have an old canon eos 300 slr camera which isn’t digital with a 28-90mm lens. What I’d like to know is can i just buy a digital canon body and use my exisiting lens? Also which slr canon digital is best?

Answer: Depending on the model you go for you will need to take into account the sensor size, if you go for a consumer model the sensor is cropped, making the lens behave in a more telephoto fashion, so a 28-90 will behave more like a 45-150mm lens.

You will find the most evenly matched camera for spec is the EOS1000D is good (the 450D has more AF points, spot metering and more megapixels) and does everything asked of it pretty well.

The 40D & 50D are a bit bulkier and made from metal components rather than plastic, also these cameras have a flash synch socket, if this is important to you.

The full frame option is the EOS5Dmk2. Where your lens will behave like it does on your EOS 300. However, the differences between film & digital when it comes to recieving light means that your 28-90 lens won’t perform that well on a full frame body.

I Sigma 10-20mm wide angle, and I'm looking to sell it and buy a wide angle macro. What are the best wide angle macro lenses out there?

Answer: A macro wide angle? I do not think there is such a thing. If there were, you should get about an inch away from the topic of focus at the macro level 1:01 true. This would of course greatly increase the potential of affecting your item before your subject! Macro lenses are generally telephoto lenses which allows you to be at least a few inches from your subject. Tamron 18-250 and 18-270 do not make a macro, but they are not really even close a true macro 1:1, and you'd need to use the TV to get very close all … in other words we can hardly be considered a real macro.
