I'll stick with flash memory and miniDV tape. Types video files? HDD and flash memory are the same – very compressed, so a lot of data discarded – miniDV tape is the best video. Archiving? HDD and flash memory are the same – RAID1 hard disk storage – miniDV tape is the cheapest and best. But means that your miniDV tape computer must have a firewire port … Otherwise, hopefully it has an expansion slot so you can add one – not the case, the flash memory is the best option. Since if we do not know what your needs are, it is difficult to "choose."

third, DVD uses a rather slow datarate, only 6 mbps requiring high compression of the recorded video.

as to avoiding a computer, all consumer camcorders can playback to a TV set using AV connectors. HD versions come with either HDMI or component outs to a HDTV.

while no computer is needed to watch, achiving to a permanent storage is another issue. a good reason for sticking with miniDV tape is the tape becomes the archive. tape is cheap to buy, alway use a new one and put the used ones on the shelf. The other types require either a computer to burn a DVD or a DVD player/recorder to make DVD archive copies.

as to camera, all require reasonable light to make good pictures. none require stabilization if you are close to subject, its only the very distant telephoto range that is stablized. i can’t imagine a miniDV camera that would not be satisfactory for your needs.
