Question: Question about Nikon D-40 camera and use of manual lenses.?

I have been completely outfitted with Nikon for many years. Then came digital. Finally the D-40 style cameras take my old lenses. To my dissapointment, I am told that I can only use them if I set the lens on f-22. This eliminates the entire reason for purchasing a D-40 or D-80 body, since my nice lens is stopped down to a pinhole. If I buy the most expensive model at about $1000, I can manually change the f-stop. I’m told the D-40 and D-80 will not allow this in spite of the fact you can physically attach the lens. Is this true? I also have an N-65 film camera that has an auto focus lens. Will it also require an f-22 setting to work on a D-40 or D-80?

Answer: Ai-P specification lenses are the only manual focus lenses that will meter properly on a D40.

The D40 will operate just fine with other Nikkor MF lenses, just you will have no metering at all, and the focus may take some practice since the D40 has a matte focusing screen without a split dot (you can use electronic focus assist though and look for the >o< in the finder when you're in focus). Although not recommended by Nikon, the D40 is said to have no problems with pre-Ai lenses that don't have any protrusion into the mirrorbox area like big fisheyes.

Question: What digital SLR camera is best for me?

Hi, I'm looking at buying my first digital SLR, Can someone help me make a decision? I have done a fair bit of research and trawling through eBay, and still can not reach a decision. The Nikon D90 is perfect for me, but not the price tag – even second hand! Heres some "criteria" for the perfect camera body price max $ 500au only (PVP or second hand)-live view auto focus-8MP +-dust control of the camera used to take the high-action photography quality, macros, stills and everything in general. So it must be compatible with many types of lenses. I've been looking at Nikon, but any brand serves. I know I am not going to get everything you want in my price range, so let me know what you think of the camera (:

Answer: You can never go wrong with Nikon. Just make sure you also buy some other goals as well with the camera, for example, the fisheye lens. Also make sure buy a little warming and cooling filters also. This will give you the edge when the time is not with you. If you are considering a used one. Its good to practice, if you are starting photography. you can do experiments and learn and comfortable with your abilities when you buy a new one. Best of luck.
