Question: Can I use normal bulbs with studio lights?

Maybe of a lower wattage?

Answer: Sure, but it may depend on the type of fixture you are using.

Most stage / studio projector bulbs can be very expensive! They perform a specific task of casting light from long distances and they do their job well. Many fixtures have specific light bulb base requirements, so only a specific bulb will work.

However, if your fixture will allow for a different bulb to work, then it should be fine. You will, most likely, lose light quality though as cheaper replacement lights will probably not be as bright and will not be able to cast the light as far.

Question: is it impossible to use studio lighting without a light meter?

I'm considering investing in some amateur lights, just to shoot family and friends. I can get two monolights for ~$400, but a decent light meter itself will run $250! While I will eventually make the commitment to a Sekonic L358, I'm wondering if I can get away without it now!

Answer: A Gray card can be used to get your ratios in place of a meter. If you want details email me.
