Question: Trying to find a UV protection filter for my Canon Rebel XT?

I just recently bought a Canon Rebel XT and a friend told me that a UV filter will help protect the lens, so I am looking. Right now the only lens I have is the 18-55mm standard lens that comes with the camera. I am wondering of the Tiffen 58mm UV protection filter will fit on my lens.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004ZCJI/ref=s9cpicf_r1_asinmore-rfc_g1-2991_g1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=0XH4NQ2PVGATWKM3S2AA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=288031701&pf_rd_i=507846

If not, which UV protection filter should I use?

Answer: For a smaller lens like this, I’d go for the sky 1A for a slight warming effect. Subtle results, but the UV haze is generally used on longer lenses intended to reduce atmospheric haze.
Again, the results are subtle, but I’d go with the 1A.

The price is right on the Tiffen UV, though. What a deal!

Good move by adding protection to your lens. Look into decent lens paper, a pencil lens brush and hurricane blower down the road too. A clean lens is vital for sharp images.

Question: What kind of filter should I get for my lenses?

I have a Canon 28-135mm IS USM lens that came with the 40D and I am planning to buy a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. I want a filter that would serve as protection for my lens without degrading any image quality or one that would improve it.

Can anyone recommend me a filter? Do I leave the filter on the lens at all times or do I take them off during certain shooting situations? Please give a link to the item if possible.

Do I need 2 separate filters or just 1 filter that can fit both lenses?
Ok I did some research and I think what I need is a UV filter for everyday use and a polarizer filter for outdoor use.

If I get the UV filter and the polarizer filter, can I use both at the same time? Or do I have to take off the UV filter, then put on the polarizer filter?

Also, there are so many brands/models for UV filters, which one should I get? Something that will not break the bank and something not cheap.

Answer: You should get a UV haze or skylight 1 A filter for each lens. It will not change your photos much but these filters will protect your lens. Better to scratch a 20 dollar filter than a 600 dollar or more lens.

Other than that you want a circular polarizer, linear polarizers can interfere with the metering and autofocus on digital cameras. You probably also want a neutral density filter. The polarizer and ND filter can be switched between the lenses if the lens diameter is the same. I am not sure on these canon lenses if it is.
