All compact camera's will do poorly in low light. There image sensors are small and it causes what is called noise at higher ISO levels. If you must have a compact show her how to use the flash this will help a lot in low light shots. The A-590IS has an easy mode that is so simple it is ridiculus.It also takes very nice pictures and movies w/sound.
