Question: My pictures from the zoo look dull, is there anything I could do in future to improve them?
I went to the zoo over the weekend to practice some skills. I have a few pictures that turned out pretty good, but for the most part they look dull. I think it may be because it is a zoo and there just isn’t much color. But, I looked at some pictures they had on their site and they look more bright and a live than mine. Is there something I could do to improve or something else I need?
I mostly used my Nikon D70 with Tamron AF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 LD Tele-Macro (1:3.9) for the lens and then the kit lens a little. Not filters on the Tamron lens.
Would a flash, tripod or something have helped liven these up a little?
Thanks
Answer: Firstly, you didn’t mention the ewather or time of day which you visited the zoo so I can’t say for sure if you visited on an overcast day or around noon? I take it that the pictures you find dull are probably due to lack of contrast or the color just doesn’t pop.
Try visiting early in the morning or in the evening if possible so the natural light may be better.
A tripod might help but only if you’re having issues with blurred pictures or if you need more depth of field (and hence a smaller aperture). However, since the animals probably won’t stand still, using a tripod might be a moot point anyway since the movement of the animals will result in blurred pictures.
Flash may somewhat help (for fill) but it also depends on the distance to the subject. In many zoos, the animals are probably pretty far from you so flash may not help in that sense.
Best advice I can is to pick a time of day where the natural lighting may be better for you. You’ll also probably need to put in a fair bit of effort doing post-processing on the photos. Bump up the saturation and contrast and see if that helps.

Question: Sigma 105mm, Nikkor 50mm … Any suggestions?I have to buy a Sigma 105mm macro lens for my Nikon D90. I'm really impressed with the lens, what I've seen so far. But, I will be on the lookout for a lens that take good macro shots, as well as portraits, and the ordinary Life. I got the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens. I liked the quality of the lens, and it's ability to beautiful images of flowers, as well as every day life. At the moment I have the kit lens, the 18-105mm with a macro filter is on it. But it significantly distorts the outer area of the photo, I've always been very satisfied with this so I was not in the mood, frustrated, take some pictures. The lens would you recommend? If there are any other lenses that you suggest for me, a Look at it, that would be great. Thank you very much for your help. Yes, I am not stupid enough to believe that the 50mm is macro.
Answer: AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105 2.8 IFED
