Question: Sailing in the Caribbean March through July- what essential personal kit do I need?

I am off for my first sea phase with the Merchant Navy in a month as a deck cadet. I will be working on a 10,000t product tanker doing shuttle runs around the Caribbean islands, north east coast of South America and the US gulf.

What items of essential personal kit do I need? Dress code for the bridge is shorts and T-shirt, and a boiler suit when working on deck. Will the weather be sunny and clear the whole time I’ll be at sea, or should I prepare for rough conditions too? Is it hot day and night? Should I take a waterproof coat just in case?

What would you advise taking in the way of things to do when I’m off watch- I was thinking of an audiobook to learn a foreign language, my camera, some music and my fishing tackle, in case the captain lets me fish from the stern when we’re at anchor.

What do you think? Any help is welcome.

Answer: WOW!
I am shocked they have not provided you with a list of personal items you will need. I am sure they have them, so you should ask. Most provide heavy rain gear… but you need to ask.
For one… I am in the Caribbean right now (Berry Islands just southeast Bimini Island) and it is 78 degrees. Tomorrow and rest of the week it is expected to reach 80′s. From now to July, it will just keep getting warmer – so leave your parka at home – you will not need it.
Typically, all you will need is one or two cotton sweaters for those unseasonal cool nights and mornings, a light hooded wind breaker works well and you will use it often. (Aside from shorts and T-shirts it is the most frequently used item of clothing we wear.
If you are not real used to the sun – you also need a couple of light weight – light color cotton long sleeve shirts. I personally use white cotton long sleeve button down dress shirts, as they are very comfortable and offer flexible use can wear them over a T-shirt or not, roll up the sleaves, or not, but you will, for sure want something to keep your arms, neck, shoulders, thighs and knee caps out of the direct sun on those days when you have had too much already… And while we are on the subject, you will want a wide brim hat, a ball cap, and lots of heavy protection sun lotion… If you are white, anglo-saxon – you will burn, blister, and be miserable if you don’t protect your skin – I don’t care how tough you are (or think you are) you will tan, even burn, in the Tropics if you are not careful.

For summer months, absolute low temperatures at night are generally around 65 to 70 day time temperatures are mostly 80 to 90′s – the dry season is from December to May, the hottest between May and October, and the rainy season is May, June and July.

As far as “stuff” to take – again – you need to ask first… Your fishing gear and tackle will probably be embarrassingly too little and too light as well as useless. From Bimini to Venezuela you will be in the Big Game Fishing Wonderland of the world – and unless your vessel slows and takes time to let the crew fish, you will never land your catch… as most everything you catch will take an hour or more to land, and that’s with the boat chasing the fish after you hook it. Most vessels will not let you fish – and the smaller ones that do, usually have gear for the cooks crew.

Again, you need to check with someone… usually there is a complete handbook of instructions that tell you what you can bring as well as what you can’t. Also, what clothing and other personal items are recommended.

I am sure they will have entertainment on board, movies, books to read, etc. I would forget the audiobook and go for a laptop… you’ll be better off writing a book about your experience then reading another…

For sure, it will be an experience you will never forget.
John

PS, “salt peter” is popular for two things… 1. it is used in making dynamite. 2. it is used so you will not feel a cotton pickin’ thing between your legs – kinda the same effect of making you a “steer” rather then a “bull” while at sea – so you won’t be thinking of all them pretty little heffers.

Question: Help me Decide! Fuji S9600 or Panasonic FZ50 or even S9600FD ?

I’m undecided which camera to go for, Fuji S9600 or the Panasonic FZ50 which has the higher spec’s & some better features though gives noise in the higher ISO’s.
I also now believe the S9600 is the UK’s equivant to the USA S9000, if this is so why such a differance in model names?!!
Does anybody with experience of these cameras have some good advice, in helping me make my decision?
Then there’s the Fuji S9600FD due for release, does anybody know when it will be released? If so where? At what cost? Does anyone know of any discount vouchers for any of the above?
I must have a UK spec camera, for should there be a need for repairs, Not a grey import.

Genuine replies please! Don’t like wasting money or points.

Answer: Hi Bob, these are all fine cameras. The best advise is to go here www.dpreview.com and look under cameras for their respective makes/brands and you will see test reports on them, You will also see sample images etc plus if you register with the website you can participate in forums where there are plenty of advises given.

Answer: There are a few things you need to look at if your computer has s-video only Then you have to do it that way, but you have to use a DVI output on it, if your TV HDready how the idea Digtal loose S-video and livelier than their analog Film to slow somewhat, as it convert it from digital to analog, but only if your TV via Scart or S-video, you must use svideo as well, if your TV Has HDMI and your computer has to use dvi, if possible, unless it is vga on your TV on your monitor, using a VGA cable you can have an adapter for your DVI-VGA onyour comp change hope that this helps at all, if you do not have some of them get on your comp then a video card that will need either an AGP or PCI Guess, but you must check your motherboard PCI should be your last choice IT Technician
