Although, if you are going to be recording from a distance (nature recording) go with the Sony DCR-SR42 for its zoom capability.

Question: My video from my Sony HDD handycam wont play on my new computer?

I just got a new (for me) and gateway series computer desktop. I tried to connect my sony handy cam dcr sr45 HDD camera to it and it wont play videos. When I try I get the "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem playing the file. Further, assistance, click Web Help "pop-up Windows Media Player. I tried to install the drivers, but that shouldn't have been made The first time I connected my cam on my computer? any suggestions? I thought the software downloaded and installed the first time I connected my camera to my computer. I was trying to use Windows Movie Maker, when I discovered my problem. mpeg files are not playing on Windows Media Player or Winamp. but will work on a media player called VLC

Answer: I have a Sony Handycam, and this happened to me too. This is a compatibility problem with the system operational. And 'only supported on Windows XP (assuming that the camera is a nice old). I have a handycam mini dvd, so I just close the disc on the camera when I did the shooting, and stick the dvd small computer. This works fine. You can also go to the website of Sony and see if there are updated drivers for your camera. Just type the model number in the search bar on their web page.
