Question: Need help with directional microphone for Canon HF S100 camcorder?

I am looking to purchase a Rode VideoMic as a directional mic solution for my new Canon HF S100, however Canon has ingeniously made their connection into a ‘mini advanced accessory shoe’ (which basically is trying to railroad you into purchasing their specific mics). What I need help with is finding a universal shoe adapter that fits Canon’s specific mini shoe and also to find out if there are any other leads / cords that I need to connect the mic to the camera. Here is a link to the adapter from an American store but I live in the UK so need to purchase from England as need it quickly.

Answer: You could always just use a “camera bracket”.

I could not find a “Bower camera bracket” equivalent (there’s one at the US Amazon), but the UK Amazon has a “Metz camera bracket”.

It mounts to the camcorder’s tripod mount (and there is a screw hole in the bottom of the thumbweel so you can still mount to a tripod). Just put the regular sized accessory mic clip in the camera bracket’s full sized accessory shoe.

I like the Bower because it is angle and has a handle and two-handed is more steady… and it has to accessory shoes – one mic, one light. Perhaps there is a nearby camera or electronics shop that carries camera brackets… The Metz has only a single shoe…

Question: PC Sync Cord sled Qn the House?

I recently purchased 2 strobes, as PC Sync Cord. I need to connect it to my car Photo, unfortunately it doesn't have jack cable. I heard adapters that remain on the sled that can receive the sync cable. My strobes work when my camera flashes. But I do not want my camera flash to light … Well it doesn't flash – it wont turn on strobe .. I have no good solution for this scenario? I plan to buy Canon Digital Rebel … Took PC sync … thanks

Answer: The Wein PC Safe is great for wired connections. I perfer to use a wireless transmitter and receiver. I connect to a Monolight fire and the other in slave mode. The PocketWizard is a great unit. I found a device cheap that works well on eBay for you. I bought one like this for a friend.

Question: Best place in London to sell your old cameras to?

I’ve got 2 old cameras I wanna sell.
I’ve had them for ages now and I’m definintely no camera buff, I just always thought they looked way to expensive to throw away or give to charity.

One camera is PRAKTICA B200 with an added CARL ZEISS JENA 1:2,8 f=20mm MC lens (looks extremely expensive) and a COBRA AUTO 150 added flash which slips into the camera at the top.
No idea if they’re working, just found them in my loft years back and assume they belong to my dad.

Second camera is a SUPER SWINGER POLAROID LAND CAMERA. this isn’t as visually appealing as the other but it’s a polaroid. Once again no idea if either of them work…

All comments welcome, just please don’t talk about ebay and fancy photo lingo as I’m just not into it. I just wanna sell it to a good shop where I’ll be compensated and a rightful customer can have some fun with it.

Cheers!

Answer: The Zeiss Jena may be worth quite a lot. I looked on ebay for an idea of price, and is probably worth over £100 provided it’s in good condition. Oh and don’t get rid of this lens unless you have permission…its way too good just to chuck out.

The Praktica B mount is now obselete, but it’s an old 35mm SLR that may be able to be sold for a fair bit too.

There should be quite a few camera shops on Tottenham Court Road, they may give you a valuation. It’s an idea to look on this website listing lots of used camera shops http://www.ukcamera.com/usedcams/index.htm for an idea of what things (particularly the Zeiss Jena) are worth.
