Question: What other studio lighting do i need?
Ok, what i have so far is two umbrella lights, and that’s just not enough, i mean it works, but i know i need more and i don’t know if i should get a soft box or strobes, please any opinions on which or something else i should get and how do strobes work? would i need a cord going to it from my camera? i have a nikon d40 and d60, you can go to chanikkiimagery.blogspot.com to see the portraits i have taken so far with what i have, also i just ordered a hi key white vinyl backdrop. what do i need to properly light this to make it hi-key?? and hi key isn’t that important i was just going to use it inplace of muslin to keep down wrinkles, etc. thanks!
Answer: You definitely need strobes. Something 200w/s would work, so 2 of those, at least one with a softbox. I like octagonal softboxes. You need a couple background and/or hair lights probably around 150 w/s would be enough and something to direct light down to a smaller beam for a hairlight, a snoot and honeycomb or something similar. So 2 of those would be good with one snoot and honeycomb.
Shooting something high key is just making it a couple steps brighter than “ideal”. White vinyl is reflective. Its not necessarily a good thing. If you really want to do high key with white muslin, you just light it really really bright and even if you do have wrinkles, they’ll wash out in all the light.
I’d recommend a wireless trigger and receiver. You just put the trigger on the hot shoe and plug the receiver into one of the lights and turn all the others to slave off that one. I’m not sure what to tell you about your umbrella lights. With strobes, they become that much less useful. Constant lighting tends to get washed away by strobes particularly if they have any kind of power at all. You don’t need giant powerful 500w/s strobes unless you plan on shooting a lot of people from far away at a very small aperture. Its overkill. If you can get 300 w/s strobes for a little bit more than the 200 w/s I would do it, but if its going to be a lot more, you don’t need it. Its nice to have a reflector and a stand too. I like my silver and gold reflector. The gold makes nice warm tones. Good Luck.
