Question: Would an accidental quarter turn of focusing ring damage motor?

When I was putting on and taking off the lens hood on my 18-55 IS lens the focus ring turned a quarter revolution either way. Only afterwards did I notice that the AF/MF friction lock was on. Did I do any damage to the AF motor inside the lens. It felt like turning any motor by hand. Some resistance but not too much. Could this disrupt the AF system or damage anything. I will be careful to put it in MF when attaching the hood. Anyone ever damage a motorized camera lens this way?

Answer: You will have to test the auto-focus feature of your camera and see if it still works perfectly.

You need to establish a work-flow that will prevent you from doing that again.

Attaching a lens hood should not effect the focus of the lens.

Answer: If you do it completely in black, likely to be very "bad." However, here's how: Select the background (or fly, and then invest – whichever is easier to do) with all the tools work best. Now flood fill the selection with black (not a good technique) or more natural way to reduce the levels / brightness. The best, would blur and darken the background a little, but not the whole way. Similar techniques, but have the scope and / or reduce the opacity of the layer to reduce the effect.
