Question: Ive just invested in some studio backdrops ‘muslin’ how do you keep them crease free and taught when in use?
Im new to the studio environment and was realy looking forward to getting started, however, since setting the kit up ive had nothing but nightmares keeping the backdrop crease free when ever anyone moves on it!!
When looking at pics on web sites and books or at final results, they all look so crisp and taught when in use, not a crease in sight!!!
Please advise?????
Also what would the ideal cleaning method of muslin be?
Can you iron it?
All advice is much appreciated
Thanks for the english lesson fatty!!!Lol, we wondered how long it would be before the ‘yahoo answers got nothing better to say obvious wiz’ would pipe up about that one!!! LOL LOL LOL
I knew I should have called my bookie.
Princess, how do you keep it taut? The ‘muslin’ that is!!!
Answer: Studio backgrounds are usually seen as disposable items.I’ve used both fabric and stiff paper rolls over the years. With paper a no shoes policy is usually applied, except for the models and a floor mat used as an access point. With fabrics there are two approaches.Your muslin ,mounted on old carpet rolls of cardboard, could be stretched and stapled to the floor,if that is feasible,if not house bricks covered in the similar fabric works well. These regimes have worked in many schools and colleges with large numbers of students active in the studio at any one time.Rather than waste the backgrounds, fabrics can be washed and ironed,or for an arty effect crumpled up deliberately. Both fabrics and paper can be painted, either with household emulsion paint,or even old spray cans, this later was always popular with the wanna be graffiti artists, even the old duffers, like me in their 60s!!!!Stage scene painters canvas is available in 14ft rolls and is especially long lasting.

Question: What type of material is used for portrait studio backdrops other than muslin cloth?
I have the cotton muslins but want to switch to the kind that are not cloth…like the kind professional studios have with the rollers to pull them from…what is this material called, how much is the material, where do I get it, etc.
Answer: Canvas backdrops?
