Question: sigma 2x tele converter for sigma 70-300 ?

i have bought canon 450D before few days with kit lens. 18-55 that is enough for general photo. for long distance like wild life or bird photography i need good long tele lens. first of all i cant afford high prices lenses, Canon 75-300 is not good option because of its bad result and canon 70-300 is too costly. so i have turn back to sigma 70-300 APO DG MACRO F4.5/5.6, and apart from that i am thinking to buy 2x converter from sigma APO. this will give as per my calculation 960 mm i will get. ( 300 x 1.6 focal length x 2 ).
can somebody guide me is this combination fine for wildlife and bird photography ? any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Answer: It will give you the reach, but will cut back on quality.

First Sigma 70-300 is not a very sharp lens, especially on the long end to begin with. Then you add more cheap glass to it.

Also, keep in mind that Sigma 2x converter will eat 2 full stops of light. Yes, two full stops. So you will effectively have f/9-11 lens. That’s f/11 on long end. I am not sure if the camera will even be able to auto-focus through a lens this dim. And forget hand holding it altogether. You need a very steady tripod, cable release and motionless subjects. Plus plenty of light. Dark forests out of question. Dawn/dusk shooting too. Yo may be able to get away with it in broad daylight on open space…

Unfortunately, the “you get what you pay for” rule stands for lenses as an exemplary situation. You really can’t expect quality with cheap glass. Lens is the most important part of your camera, you really shouldn’t save on one… I’m afraid that with that setup, you may be better off with one of these super-duper zoom point and shoot cameras that cost a lot less… Though again… p&s is p&s, so don’t hold your breath for it…

Answer: Probably yes, but unless that is at least 300mm af/2.8 function autofocus does not work. From Pro 300 2x Digital specifications: full AF operation is only possible with lenses with open aperture of f/2.8 or brighter "and" Please be aware that AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the AF sensors to activate the camera. "You do not tell us what you tried to use this 300mm tele-convert with. mounts are currently available for Canon EOS, Minolta AF, Nikon and Pentax-AF-AF
