Question: Setting up mini photography studio….?

My sister and I are wanting to set up our own studio for taking our kids’ pictures. We both just got our own Nikon d40x’s for Christmas (yes – we were spoiled!). My sister is looking at actual photography studio kits on ebay…..and from what I can tell, other than possibly a slave flash on our camera with a possible diffuser – all we would need are regular lights to take away the shadows in the back……
Would this work? or do we “need” to get the umbrellas, stands, lights, etc. What’s the cheapest way to start this out – while getting good quality pictures?

Answer: You should have at least one umbrella or softbox to use, with a strobe. It will give you better control of your lighting, diffusing it and taking some glare away.

If you dont want something the size of full studio equipment, go here: strobist.blogspot.com, and look thru the site. It is about modifying light from flashes to work for different situations. Generally cheaper and easier to use in a home studio.

Question: Beginner studio lighting kit for portraits, what, when, when?

Hiya, as above, im looking to buy a starter lighting kit to mainly use for headshots with a collapsible background (which I also need). Does anyone know what kind of wattage and system I should be looking for. Found on ebay, a starter kit for £150, including 2 x 45w lights with slave, umbrellas, double sided background. Does that sound suitable?…Also, as mentioned Id love a collapsible larger than 6 x 6 background-double sided, anyone know of great deals for them, other than Calumet, any second hand places?
Any other info you could give me for a starting photographer would be fab!…..

Now to the question about a lighting (studio) kit

I use a single 750 watt Lowel Tota-light with an umbrella and stand (under £90) and use a Savage portable background stand (about £65). The backgrounds can be as simple as four metres of black or white cloth you can find in a yardage store.
