Oh and here is the camera i havehttp://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=10464
Answer: Listen to Astrum Magister–he can do good work, you can see by the quality of his shot.
The camera and telescope combo you have will be hard to work to a proper focus–this is why:
The eyepiece (no camera) comes to a focus when the light is only an inch outside the telescope tube, well inside the focuser. That is too deep for the camera focal plane chip to reach easily. You are more than two inches too far from the side of the tube to focus the camera on infinity (the moon). Prove this to yourself by practicing in daylight on an object at least a mile away. Can’t focus? I thought so.
If you can’t focus in daylight a mile away, you can’t focus on the moon at night.
How to solve–you must one of these methods:
Move camera a lot closer to the side of the tube. The focuser needs to be lower. A new model of less height could be bought and installed.
Move mirror at bottom of scope closer to the top end of the scope, which will move the focused light out farther toward the camera. Not easy.
Put in a Barlow lens between focuser and camera. This will move the focused light out closer to the camera. You also get 2X or 3X higher magnification. But the field of view of the shot is half or a third as wide, and the light intensity is only 1/4 to 1/9 as much.
Put eyepiece in focuser tube, and hold complete camera behind eyepiece. This is the “afocal” photo system. This is hard to do without making clamps to hold camera over eyepiece, or put camera on another tripod (not convenient).
Put eyepiece in focuser, and put camera in special adapter behind eyepiece lens barrel, with camera lens removed. This is eyepiece projection. This is very high magnification method. It is difficult to get a good shot with fine focus this way, but can be done.
