Question: Question about SP Studio Systems Excalibur 3200 monolights?
I can’t get them to fire with the test button or the sync. It makes a little noise when its triggered but it won’t fire. It wants to fire when I turn the unit on some of the time, so I know the strobe bulb is fine. I checked the fuses which are also in tact. Since SP studio systems has no website, I can’t even contact them as far as I know. Anyone know what the problem might be or how to contact SP Studio Systems? Thanks!
Steve – I have 2 of them that I just bought 2nd hand. The person I bought them from tested them as I stood there and watched and they seemed to work. One works just like its supposed to. The other one makes a slight noise when it should fire, but doesn’t actually fire. The modeling lamp works, just the strobe doesn’t actually flash. On a positive note, I didn’t pay a lot for them and I purchased the set as a secondary kit.Answer: I did like you are tried to search for a website and obviously there is not one, which I find very odd for any kind of reputable product. So how many lights do you have? The two or three light kit? … and NONE of them will fire?
If you only had ONE light, or even just one light that was not firing, then I would think it was just a defective unit, but if you cannot get ANY of your lights to fire, I have to think there is SOMETHING you are not doing correctly, but sorry, I sure don’t know what that could be. But simple logic dictates that if all your lights are not working, that ALL of them are probably not defective, and the problem lies elsewhere.
Where did you purchase the lights? My first recourse would be to contact the seller from where they were purchased. If they cannot help you, then they may at least agree to take them back in exchange for another brand of lights.
Good luck to you.
steve
EDIT: Oh, ok, they are second hand, not that that is necessarily a bad thing. I have lots of used gear. Are you SURE it is not the strobe bulb? Have you tried swapping bulbs between the working unit and the non working unit? That would be the first thing I would try just to POSITIVELY take the bulb out of the equation. If it still does not work, I really don’t know what to tell you. With seemingly no way to contact the manufacturer and it being second hand, you may to just write it up to bad luck and move on. Sorry.

Question: Is it possible to use U.S. standard Monolights 110V/60Hz in the UK with an appropriate transformer? And what kind of transformer I need when the needs of each lamp 1200W? Ive got some single Visatec straps 1600 that brought me to the States, are sadly all standard 110V/60Hz U.S. (a dual voltage difference). Since a lot of effort to get here, I really want to use them Im trying to find a processor to run here in the UK. Although I think everyone needs 1200W, Im not sure they need 1200W continuous as part of the continuing implementation is only a halogen light modeling, but nevertheless, I prefer to be safe than sorry. Has anyone had any experience in the management of its U.S. strobes in the UK? Any help would be huge!
Answer: Apart from the processors, which is the easiest and cheapest of the problem, there are only two ways I know to convert the frequency of 50Hz (UK) at 60 Hz (USA): mechanically, with engines and generators, and power, a rectifier and inverter. A Many times, companies will sell inverters that come with voltage transformers, because if you're wanting to change the frequency, will probably want change the voltage, too. As you can see (below), these can be quite expensive … If you are a professional and do not want to risk damaging the equipment, then you would buy something that is manufactured to be on the safe side … otherwise, I'm sure I could build one of these on your own for much lower cost. One thing I would do Visatec is call and ask about these lights. Many times, the devices will be quite flexible in what they can handle as input power, but since these be done in the U.S., probably only a slap on some 120V/60Hz rating from the norm. Visatec Ask for any information on whether they can handle 50Hz signal. If all these are are the lights, then it seems that there might be a good chance he would accept 50Hz, if there is a power supply and a lot of equipment that goes with them, then I'm not so sure. This is what one person asked about the implementation of tungsten bulbs in a different frequency: Some http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/47/855470 more help: http://buyersguide.bargainoffers.com/voltage_guide.shtml
