Question: FIRST Strobe?
I really want to get started with off-camera lighting, but really get confused with all the equipment terminology and technique.
I am a member on Strobist (I think) and I’ve browsed the sight quite well, but I don’t know what I need as far as starter equipment goes.
I just want to start with one flash, and maybe a diffuser AND a “reflecter” umbrella.
I know I need a stand, but I don’t know about triggers and such
.
Could someone recommend SPECIFIC items that I should get to start off with?
I am very much a rookie, so please be as specific and thorough as possible, thanks!
Answer: The strobist 101 getting started page (yeah you gotta look kinda deep) http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101-start-here.html says a good one to start with the http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/61441-REG/Vivitar_233965_285HV_Auto_Flash.html theres others but this is the one thats currently being manufactured.
But you can start with just about any flash with the right adapter. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?shs=hotshoe+to+pc&ci=0&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=productlist.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t a hotshoe to pc adapter will allow you to use a cord http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/41545-REG/Pentax_37344_4P_Sync_Cord_A.html to connect to your strobe. If your flash has a pc link you can just plug into that. Other wise you will need this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/109454-REG/Kaiser_201301_PC_to_Hot_Shoe.html to mount your hotshoe on. That usually will come with threads on the bottom to mount on a standard tripod.
Or you can go wireless. Check the strobist blog for poverty wizards. You need to tweak with them to make them work right but they are cheap. http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157603268298539/?search=what+are+poverty+wizards You get them on ebay.
As I said you just mount the flash on a regular tripod with the right adapter. You can also get adapters that let you put an umbrella on it as well. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?shs=umbrella+shoe+mount&ci=0&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=product.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t they mount onto tripods.
The guys at the strobist group really dont mind the newbies asking these things. They are actually quite nice. They are the do it yourself kind of group though. So they usually will try to tell you how to build something rather than put a ton of money into it. You can also search the other discussions for key words http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=&w=71917374%40N00&m=discuss
You will need a camera with at least a hotshoe (place to mount a flash) or a pc port (most newer inexpensive cameras dont have a pc port).

Question: Flash Diffuser (Gary Fong) vs. Flash strobe?I'm considering the purchase of Gary Fong Whale Tail Flash Diffuser (reference: http://store.garyfonginc.com/wtcompletes.html) photoshoot for studio portrait. The announcement indicates that the result will be as good as when the strobe lights umbrella + Or other objects are used bounce. If you have used or are familiar with both the results, could you give me your comments on this? I 'm attracted by the broadcaster in terms of cost compared to strobe lights and other uses. Thank you in advance!
Answer: I basically agree with what others have said. I have not used the whale's tail, but I used Fong Lightspheres the years for wedding photography. His broadcasters can do a great job, but again, you do not need to experience The camera and flash settings for best results. However, NO camera flash diffuser will never equal flashes true and great studio softboxes / umbrellas. With the diffuser, you are still struggling with a light source with a small head on the steering. The diffuser mimics a source the greater light to some extent, but it can not duplicate a large umbrella and a FAR more powerful strobe light. Light direction is important than power or dissemination. With studio strobes, you can use wide or narrow directional lighting to highlight the definition of a face. You can never create a professional look to your real portraits with a single camera on light blasting right on the object. Your subject will always look "Flat" and uninteresting. The style Fong diffusers are ideal for events where the lighting style studio is impossible, but if you want a look real studio lighting, … then there is no substitute for the studio lighting PROPER. http://www.pbase.com/s_parrott Steve

Question: cheapest place to buy artificial fish?
Okay it sounds funny but we need to get a load of artifical fish for a community theatre production as a prop. The problem is we need a lot, and looking online they seem to be £10 per fish! since we cant use real fish coz they would stink out the theatre, can anyone suggest cheaper places we can get some?
Answer: Hi I have worked in theatre up to a semi-prof level & my suggestion would be to a) check a dollar store
or b) cut out stryofoam meat trays & use bright finger paint to acheive the high-def look that you’ll need to have them show up in a theatre–use a matching gel on the lights & you’ll be able to make them as bright or as dull as needed.
