Question: Lenses and flashes best for shows?
I’ve just been asked to start taking pictures at shows. I have a Canon Rebel xs with the standard lens, macro lenses, and a wide angle lens. If I don’t use flash, it’s blurry and when I use flash, they look washed out. What are the best lenses and/or flashes to use in lighting at shows? and what settings are best?
Answer: Overall, I think the first thing you want to learn about is exposure. Once you get those concepts, selecting the right lens as well as the right settings is a lot easier. This is the short version!
Exposure is based on your ISO setting, the shutter speed and the aperture (F stop).
ISO on a digital camera is the sensor’s sensitivity to light. A low ISO number needs more light to make an exposure than a high ISO number. The trade off is that high ISO usually introduces digital noice. An ISO like 100 is great for sunny days, An ISO light 400 better for action for photography or low light. Many camera experience noise starting at around ISO 800 and even more at 1600.
Aperture (F stop) is the size of the hole in the lens that allows light through. In a low light situation, you want the biggest hole you can get (this is dependent on the lens you use). Small F stop numbers actually mean large holes. F1.8 is a large aperture – lets a lot of light in and is very useful when the light is low.
When you set your Shutter Speed, you are determine how long the shutter is open, and consequently how much light passes through to the sensor. A slow shutter speed, like 1/30 of a second, means a lot of light passes through. A fast shutter, like 1/500, means a very little passes through.
So in a dark environment, bump your ISO to 400. Use the biggest aperture you can. Many people buy the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens (under $100) just to use in low light situations. If you use aperture priority (Av on your camera), the camera will select an appropriate shutter speed. If it is still too slow, like 1/30 a second or slower – you’re forced to bump up your ISO even though you will see a degradation in the picture quality.
If you want a flash for your XS, try the Canon 430 EX.
