Question: Will my US electrical appliances work in Korea?
What adapters or converters are needed? What is a converter for? What does step down, step up mean?
Answer: If it is a recently made appliance, you should be able to use it in Korea. I remember many Americans telling me that I wouldn’t be able to use my electronics in Korea. I brought my laptop and a few other things, and they worked fine. Though, you should call the company that made the appliance to make sure if they have the range 110~220 volts. Many recently made appliances should have this range, which means they can be used in both the US and Korea. Make sense? If they do have this range, then all you need to do is buy a plug adaptor. This simply is a small thing that fits on top of the plug so that you can plug it into the Korean outlet. They cost about $3 in Itaewon (I remember 2,000 won). If it can’t perfor under the range of 110~220 volts, then you will need to buy a converter. You simply plug in your appliances into this small box, and it converts (step-up and step-down)the range for you. They were a bit expensive, if I remember correctly. Though, like I said, I never had to use one. Hope this information helps!
I would recommend taking only essential appliances to Korea. The shipping will far out way how much you can buy new or used ones in Korea. Electronics can sometimes be more expensive in Korea. But they tend to be better too! And there is an electronics market in Seoul that sells just about anything that you would want…including a kimchi refrigerator. ^^
