Question: Can I use a higher DC voltage adapter to charge my camera battery?

I can’t find my camera’s cord that lets me plug into the wall to recharge the battery. A relative’s cord fits into my camera, but it says the output is +9.5V (—3A) and my camera says the input should be 5.3V. Is it ok to use the higher voltage to charge the battery, or will something bad happen? Wish I knew more about electricity… :p

Answer: Most electronics have a circuit for regulating the input voltage, in most cases you can get away with a couple volts difference but in your case a 4.2 volt difference is too much to risk. Keep your electronics safe and get the proper voltage adapter.

Question: charged a new digital camera battery before first use?

I recently got a new digital camera. The minute I brought , I know it home, put the battery and memory card, and turned on him and played with the settings and took some pictures. Then I had the tiny font charge notice on the box saying "battery must complete before the first use." In asking if I damage the camera or the battery by It on and for a little while before the battery could have caused fully charged?

Answer: No harm done. It really is better enjoyed on your camera purchase and drain them before the battery is fully charged. If you have a decent charger, would it drain the battery first off to anyway, so it's free.

Its a very nice cam and brand new, is it good for making profesional videos, i have just gotten a job to record live concerts for satilite TV, but i have to buy my own camera, it HAS to be a good quality picture because i am under contract for five years, Euro 1,000 per concert, but they said if the quality sucks they will deduct my pay down to Euro 500-600 per concert, is this good quality what i have listed above?
in this job, i am not taking photos but i will be on stage running around to get close-up shots, this is a camcorder
i am still in college and i dont think i can afford anything over USD $300-400 untill this job starts paying off

Answer: Compare it to the Canon XL-2 and see how it stands up.

The Canon XL-2 is one of the standards used in the mini-DV level of cameras. This camera produces broadcast quality image and is one of the best under $6,000 range. The standard Sony Broadcast cameras (betacams) are in the over $100,000 range so are mostly limited to television broadcasting companies

What I would do before spending a penny would be to attend one of the concerts and see what cameras are being used. This more than anything else will be helpful in determining which camera to invest in.

Is the brand name and model number a secret? Let us know and we can better help you.

EDIT .. as long as you avoid using the “digital” zoom, your quality should be okay, but I would hate to see you spend the money on a camera that will not do the job. You may want to rent a suitable camera until you can afford the right one

Question: Is there an optical filter that is sensitive to mechanical force exerted on the material?

Normal optical filter blocks certain frequency range light. characteristics of the filter is static and never changes. What I'm looking for is a filter with variable characteristics, which is sensitive to the pressure exerted on it. For example, if a filter is stretched out, it moves its range of filtration as the stretch continues. Am I dreaming? Watching the spectacle that turns dark when it is out and becomes light when inside, I hope not.

Answer: Yes, there are loads of photoelastic substances around. They are mostly used in thin films to produce interference patterns when the parties are stressed. Here's a really interesting paper some years ago on a new use of one of these films: http://polypedal.berkeley.edu/twiki/pub/PolyPEDAL/MechanicsResearch/jeb9681_singleleg.pdf
