Question: I have a canon eos 400d dslr camera what do the different settings on the dials do and mean?
Answer: You really need to take a class in photography.
You have a very nice camera which is completely adjustable to perform all the functions any pro photographer or advanced amateur photographer may need.
Until you do take a class, just read the manual and use the camera until you can take a photo any where under any lighting situations without having to think too much about it.

Question: What’s the biggest dif. between using an Umbrella and a softbox?
I’ve never really used an umbrella before, but the lights I’m looking at (Alien Bee) have a package that include umbrella’s instead of soft-boxes.
One is shoot through, and the other one says that it’s silver lined to bounce the light out or something… Sounds weird.
Should I just stick with what I know and buy softboxes and toss the Umbrella’s, or are they similar enough to figure out?
Thanks!Answer: I don’t think you’ll see a big difference in the quality of light from a softbox or a shoot through umbrella. Both give soft, diffused light. You can control the light a little easier with a softbox than an umbrella, but alternatively, unless you are getting a big softbox, a shoot through can give more illumination for a full length shot of a person.
Refector umbrellas are “the” orginal umbrella. You point your AB away from the subject and into the inside of the umbrella. The light hits the umbrella and reflects back on to the subject. It is a little harsher light than a shoot through, almost more like direct flash, but still a pleasing effect.

Question: the question of alien bees – so I'm wanting to put together a photography studio for beginners and I need enlightenment.?Alien bees have come a lot. at most I could afford 2 alien bee B400 flash drives, and it would be stretching the budget (http://alienbees.com/flash.html). This would watts enough for portraits in the studio? I want to make portraits, portraits of animals, and some still alive. would only be possible to get a B400 with a reflector? Also, I a separate flash for my camera – only one built, so I could use that in addition – it would only bees alien. I heard you need at least 1000 watts per portraits, but that is far beyond my budget with the alien bees. so this would be my best option for me? thanks!
Answer: B400 should be sufficient for the head and shoulder shots, two or three people, still life and pets. Would be partial to full length. 150 watt, direct or bounced 300 would be sufficient for the head and shoulders / 3 / 4 length portraits. I would not do the B400 with a reflector. If you buy the B400 two, they could become your background and fill …. or hair, as the lights you add to your kit.
