Answer: The absolutely best flash is the Nikon SB-800 flash. In fact, I have two of them for my D200—one for the left and one for the right side, so I can use them wirelessly, with the pop-up flash as the wireless flash controller.

The SB-600 is also good, but isn’t as powerful. It also doesn’t come with some nice accessories like the SB-800.

One of the nice accessories with the SB-800 is the 5th battery option–this gives very fast recharge times, which is important when doing pro work like a wedding.

The SB-800 also comes with a nice diffuser, which fits inside the included softcase with the flash.

You also get a color filter set with the SB-800, to have the flash match ambient lighting.

Both the SB-600 and SB-800 come with a tabletop stand, which is nice for off camera wireless flash.

If you have to buy your first hotshoe flash, it should be the SB-800 for the power and versatility. Then, for a second flash, if you need it, an SB-600 is a less expensive second flash, although a second SB-800 is preferred. If money is really tight, you can start with the SB-600 (although I still recommend the SB-800 if you can afford it).

The SB-400 is okay, but nowhere near as powerful, versatile, or useful as the SB-600 or SB-800.
