Question: How do you avoid the dark band in your pictures when taking a wide angle shot?

I have a Tokina 12-24mm wide angle lens. Does anyone know how to avoid the dark band across your pictures? Does it have something to do with using or not using a circular polarizer? Lastly, what’s better, a regular circular polarizer or a thin, multi coated circular polarizer?

Answer: You pinpointed your problem. You can seldom, if ever, use a polarizer with a very wide angle lens. A polarizer filter actually only functions in a narrow band of light, and a wide angle lens goes beyond the effective range of the polarizer, thus you get the ugly dark band. You will have to not use the polarizer with that lens… or at least not use it when you are at the wide end of the lens range.

There is no difference as to the banding if you use a thin mount or regular polarizer. The thin mount is only to help stop vignetting in the corners with a wide angle lens, but in most cases you will have the banding with the polarizer on a wide angle lens, so using the thin mount filter to try to stop vignetting is not really the problem and the point of using a thin mount is pretty much moot.

Question: Linear vs. Circular Polarizer?

Hello, I just take pictures as a hobby, and take lots of pictures of sunsets. I do not know much about photography so maybe it can help. I have a Canon Powershot S3IS and I am curious to know whether a linear or circular polarizer would be better for the pictures of the sunset? And it is worth the money extra to get one with six layers, compared to only two? I do not really get it. Thank you! Thanks Steve. I appreciate it.

Answer: should always use a circular polarizer with any camera auto focus or the focus was not working properly. And yes, more coatings on the filter, the better. Will much less prone to flare with the coatings. steve

Question: Old Olympus DSLR lens compatible with new Olympus body?

I’m planning to buy a new Olympus body my question is. Would that work with old lenses that I already have which are from Olympus as well? A new Four Thirds body would work with an old Four Thirds lens right?

Answer: Yes it is. I have had no problem using my lenses from an Olympus E-300 with my newer e-510. Since Olympus DSLRs use the 4/3 mount and all future models are projected to continue this, you can use your lenses with new camera bodies.

Question: Can I use an old Olympus SLR camera lens on an Olympus DSLR?

I have old Olympus lens, but I can on my Olympus E-420 DSLR-i know they are old manual lenses and the autofocus DSLR are, I do not know, but thay are the same shape

Answer: No, the mount is physically different. There is an adapter for the Oly OM lenses to the 4/3rds DSLR bodies, which you would allow these lenses.
